Last spring I planted a beautiful tri-color butterfly bush. Do I need to cut it back? If so,when should I do it?

Hi again Yes you need to cut Buddlejas (Butterfly Bush) back, to prevent them from getting to big. The best time to do it is early spring when athe chances of frost have past. They flower on the tips of the new growth, so it needs to be done early in the year. They are fast growing so can be cut back quite hard. I tend to cut back to 3 or 4 buds up from the base. This will have the effect of making the plant more bushy, which in turn will give you more flowers to fill your garden with scent in the summer. Paul

Butterfly Bush - I just planted this Orchid Beauty Butterfly Bush today in my backyard. It is very pretty and hope to attract birds and butterflies.
I just planted a butterfly bush today and was told by my friend that yes we do need to cut them back for the same reason you gave. It will get too big if we do not cut them. Spring is the best time to cut them. I got the Orchid Beauty bush and looks nice and watered it. I hear that both birds and butterflies love these bushes.
