When and how did you learn to knit?

My aunt taught me when I was little, and I forgot and was retaught as a teenager. I made a ton of slippers and half of a blanket, and forgot again. It's sort of like riding a bicycle though, because I managed to teach myself again when I was hired to teach a kids' knitting class.

I taught myself how to knit - it was my first winter in New England, and it was too cold to do anything else! I bought a book and some yarn and figured it out. I had a friend who knitted so she helped me a bit. My grandma tried to teach me when I was young, but I never could get the hang of it. Now that she's gone, I like that I knit and I feel like it's sort of my connection to her. My mom has two tiny baby hats that my grandma knitted, and figured out the pattern based from them, so I knit them too.

My mom taught me how to knit when I was quite young. 5-6 years old probably. I remember how terrible my work was back then!! I still love knitting now, and while I don't necessarily make the most challenging things I do make lots of things. My current projects are an afghan (2/3 done) and a few scarves on the go (Hey, it's cold in Canada!!!) ;)

I just taught a kid how to knit, and boy, does it bring back memories of the first few things I knitted. They were, um, blobs. I knitted an afghan once. I'd knit it for awhile, and then stick it back in the drawer. I'd pull it out again a few months later, and do a few rows, and then It'd go back. In the end, I finished it six years later.

It's a very versatile craft, isn't it. If you even just knit little squares, you can seam them up into things like catnip mice.

My aunt taught me a couple of summers ago because she got tired or me asking every time I saw her knitting the blankets she gave to the women's shelter what that plastic circle thing in the middle of the cable was or what that candy cane hook thing was for. I was a teenager with a crappy memory. So she taught me and then I forgot how to cast on or bind off. Luckily the mother of a friend of mine was substitute teaching my art class the week I wanted to learn again. She taught me those things, and then I learned other stitches and how to read patterns and such from the internet.

LOL, you must've been driving her nuts. it's nice that you figured it all out in the end, though. The binding off and the casting on are the hard things to remember though.

My Mum taught me when I was younger. I would occasionally start on a scarf, but lose interest after about a week or so. I seriously picked it up back in 2002 when my first nephew was born. I was determined to give him a pair of handknitted booties. Now I'm fully addicted. :)

Having a baby around is a great reason to knit! Baby things are so cute.

My Mom taught me when I was little. Never realy liked it because I was so good at crocheting. Knitting slowed me down but now at 27 I retaught myself how to knit. Still don't know if I want to keep it up but at least I'm giving it another try. I told my Mom what I was doing and she ended up picking up knitting again also.

Sometimes, I find crocheting faster too. It depends what I am making, though.

I learned to knit as a young teenager. A woman who had escaped Germany during the Second World War taught me. She said that all little girls learned to knit there at that time because they had to make all of their own socks and mittens and so on.

Strange to think how it used to be - everyone knew how to knit, and everyone knitted.

Just like you, I learned to knit a few times due to forgetting! I learned from my mom. I'd learned to crochet first and found knitting more difficult, but I persevered and now I actually knit much more often than I crochet. I started by making afghans and sweaters then moved onto smaller, more complicated items like socks and mittens. Mind you, I think I started things in reverse as it seems people start off small then go big. I just had to be different, I guess!

My aunt taught me how to knit many years ago when I was pretty young. I don't knit much, though, as I prefer Crochet. I knit mostly dishcloths.

I like crocheting as well, although right now I prefer knitting. I feel like it's faster. I kind of go through phases where sometimes I mostly do one, and sometimes the other. Knitted dishcloths are so useful.

My grandma tried to teach me when I was young, but it didn't really stick. I picked it up again college. Lots of people in my dorm knit, especially during our Friday tea, so I decided to learn too. I was really stressed out in college, especially my freshman year, and knitting was really soothing for me. Still is :-)

Well i taught myself how to knit, was up in michigan one day with my mom and decided i wanted to do something to keep my hands busy..So i picked up a cd at a craft store and some yarn and needles and i was on my way..Ive been knitting for about 4 months now...All i've made so far is scarfs but hey least it's something, I'm hoping to start on blankets/throws soon

That sounds great! Blankets and throws are just like scarves, but bigger. You could do them in stripes or squares, or you might want to use circular knitting needles if you want to make one really big piece. Hats are satisfying, and take less time than scarves.

a relative tried to teach me when i was younger, around 11 or 12 i think, but couldn't get the hang of it. i then started practicing more at 16 and worked it out myself, just like i did in crocheting. lots of tearing out stitches and starting over, lol. have tried showing others, but they can't seem to understand, so i just end up doing it for them, lol.

I think sometimes it takes several attempts to learn before it sticks into your head.

i learned to knit my senior year of high school which was about three years ago the school formed a knitting club and i thought it would be a good extra circular activity that i could put on a college application one of the home economics teachers at the high school taught a small group of us to knit i would also like to get the chance to teach a small knitting class i would like to teach people to make their own stuff instead of relying on buying things

I taught myself to knit. I went to 4 H camp one summer and purchased a learn to knit kit while there. When I got home, I taught myself to knit using this kit. I love to knit but dont do it much anymore. I had carpal tummel surgery and my hands dont work right anymore

My grandmother showed me when I was little but I couldn't get the hang of it. Then one of my son's teachers taught the whole class and he came home and re-taught me.

I learned how to knit is a homemake class in Junior High School a long time ago. The first item I knitted was a ski band that wound up with 4 ear lobs instead of 2! I was so disappointed that it was awhile before I tried it again and then I started an afghan but never finished. Then last year I picked up my knitting needles and taught myself how to knit again with the help of some websites. I knitted a washcloth and it turned out right. I need to do another project just can't decide what to do next.
