Tell me about your kids' names...

I have this thing with names and where they come from and how they were picked. I love all kinds of names. I absolutely LOVE old fashioned names and very unusual names. My son's name is CHAYTON. It is from the Sioux Indian and means Falcon...the Sioux believed that falcons carry their dreams. Since my dream all thru life was to have a baby boy, I thought this fit. Especially since I had been told I would never have children. Getting pregnant was a minor miracle and carrying my children was an even bigger one. :) The meaning of the name fit perfectly and it is a very unusual name so that is why we chose this. My daughter's name is GYLLIAN...pronounced G like goat--not J like john. It is an unusual name, as well. My husband was watching a show about witches one day and heard this name pronounced this way. We looked it up and it means "angelic"...we loved it and put her middle name as CHEYENNE to keep with the Native American theme we had from our son's name. So, tell me about your kids' names. Why did you choose their name? Any significance or do you just like the sound?

For both of our sons names we stuck with the Jewish tradition to use the first letter of a deceased love one for their names. My first son is Logan. I loved the name. I used his middle name for the tradition. It's Cole. My second son is Asher. We used his A for the deceased relative and it's also a Hebrew name. I also tried to pick names I thought were unusual but people keep telling me oh I know an Asher. I know a Logan. So there goes that.

Oh I LOVE the name Asher!!! I wanted my youngest son's middle name to be Asher, but my husband would NOT agree to it at all. He picked his grandpa's name instead (Albert), which is okay. *IF* I were to have another son, I would INSIST on Asher though. I had tried picking less than common names out for my boys also, but it seemed like each year they were born, their names "just happened" to be the top pick for each year! (Joshua, Jacob, William). Go figure. Then with my daughter's name: Melina, I had NEVER heard of that before and thought maybe for once I stumbled upon a truly unique name....only to find out that from the SS website of names, her name came in like the top 600th place out of 1000 that year for popularity. oy.

I LOVE Logan and Asher is really cool! What great names! I have never heard of Asher before. Now, Logan was my best friend's brother's middle name. But that is the only person I have ever known with that name. I think it's so cute. GREAT story with the Hebrew tradition. I think that is awesome!

I have 4 boys. The youngest one is Logan. I had always tried to pick what I thought were uncommon names but, it just never seems to work out that way. I managed to make the names a little more unique by changing the spelling. The youngest as I said is Logan, he's 7 months. The next is Mathew. Only one T. He's 19 months. Then there's a big gap. The next one is Dominik. NO C!! He's almost 10. The oldest is Cameron. He just turned 12. I don't really know what any of the names mean, I just know that I wasn't able to pick any of their names before they were born. I had everyone offering names and whatnot, but every name they mentioned I either didn't like, or I knew someone by that name. Often times it's a celebrity or a part they played. With my youngest, when his dad suggested Logan, I couldn't assosiate it with anything or anyone so I thought I was safe. Turns out I forgot about Wolverine. Oh well. I guess it's the thought that counts. And I'm happy with my decisions so it's all good.

I have five sons. Their names are: Michael Maximilian -- we call him Max. Micahel is my husband's first name and also my Dad's middle name. Max we just liked. Page Keegan -- Paige is my middle name but we named him Page as that is the male spelling for that name. Keegan means little and firey and he was born in August under the astrological sign of Leo which is a fire sign. Jonah Grey -- Jonah we love. I like the message in the book of Jonah in the Bible. Also he was born around thanksgiving and the actual word "thanksgiving" is in the book of Jonah in some versions of the Bible. Grey is a family name. It was my great grandfather's middle name. Quinn Alexander -- He's our 4th son. We were struggling to think of a name then I had a dream where God spoke to me and told me that the baby I was carrying "already had a name and it was Quinn". We had lost a baby in between Jonah and Quinn so he's actually our 5th child. Quinn means FIVE. Lastly... Niall James -- Niall means "champion". It's an Irish/celtic name that we happened upon during the pregnancy. We LOVE it. I had been considering Nigel or Knoll/Nole and then found Niall. It rhymes with smile.

Jonah Grey...how nice you tied the Thanksgiving reference to that name and also Grey is such an usual and cute name. Quinn is adorable. Reminds me of SLIDERS...did you ever watch that show? LOL Niall is SOOO CUTE! I have never ever heard that before.

I have two sisters and all three of us gave our daughters our middle names. My son is named Andrew Geyer. Andrew was my step dad's name and Geyer is the last name of my ex's step dad. So Andrew is named after both of his grandpas.

My sister did the middle name thing, too. My dad's middle name is Lee and her middle name is Lee...she gave her oldest daughter the middle name Leigh (spelled it the feminine way). I LVOE the name Geyer...I have never heard that before. I guess since it's a last name. My maiden name was Murphy and I always loved that as a first name, but it just didn't fit when our kids were born. :)

My son called jake. (both myself and my wife love this name) We don't really have a reason why we called him it, although i we are both fans of the band "less than jake". We've also called our still born daughter chloe ellen =) ~Joey

my oldest daughter's name is vyctorya keyth, she was named for my mom (vicki) and an uncle (e. keith)..i thought the y's were pretty, i was 17 when i had her...next is Kathryn Elizabeth, named for two sisters, Katie Ann (that's her whole name) and Elizabeth...she goes by katy beth (so we can keep the two katy/katie's seperate when speaking or writing about them) ... next comes james harold..i hate his middle name, my ex husband picked it out...james is for me (jamie) my dad, and my step dad ( both james who are called jim)..harold was my ex's best friend, and the other choices were larz (for the drummer from metallica) and wolfe (i don't even know), so harold seemed all right comparatively..then there is jayden darlene..i chose jayden because i wanted something different, for her to not have a name that anyone else in the family did, however it was going to be jaydenya (jay-den-ya) and i would have called her jayde, except my mother refused to pronounce it correctly because she said "it sounds black" (my mother is horribly prejudice)and darlene is my middle name, and also my mother's. my youngest is issac dean...issac is a family name from my now husband's family, he has a couple of great uncles who were isaac, i spelled it with the two ss's because i thought that isaac sounded too much like i saaaack! and dean is my husband's middle name, his father's middle name, and his grand father's middle name. we are trying for another child. for a boy we are considering david jackson, david is my husband's father and jackson is for jack, who is my grandfather and my brother and for a girl we are considering sophia (sofeeya, sophya, or something like that) and possibly the middle name davyd for her as well.

My ex husband always said if we had a boy, he wanted to name him Lars after the guy in Metallica! LOL How funny! I thought he was the only guy who thought of that. LOL Vyctorya Keyth is so cute. I love the Ys, too. With my son and daughter both, we put a Y in the name...well, CHAYTON actually has a Y in it, but GYLLIAN is really an I. kathryn Elizabeth...a nice old fashioned name...i really like it a lot. James Harold is also an old fashioned name. Harold isn't bad...really rare now days, I think. Jayden was on my list when I was pregnant with Chayton. I really like that name a lot. Issac is a great name. Oh, Sophia Davyd would be SOO adorable! Good luck and thanks for sharing.

Well, my little girl is 4, but 20 years before she was born I chose the name Holly Laraine. I love that Holly is a nature-name, kind of hippie-sounding yet not bizarre. Plus, I had a friend in high school named Holly, who was really sweet. Laraine I chose out of admiration for actress Laraine Newman, of the original Saturday Night Live cast, plus I like French-sounding names for girls' middle names. The holly plant is supposed to bring good luck, Laraine means "seagull" and symbolizes grace and freedom. I thought good luck, grace and freedom were good attributes to bestow. Over the years there were other names I liked, but I always came back to Holly Laraine, I just knew that was the name she was "meant" to have. If I'm ever blessed with another (I'm already in my 40s), a daughter will be Anastasia Justine. To me Anastasia sounds strong, formidable, it was also used heavily in medieval Ireland and England. Justine is so exotic, and goes well with Laraine. A son would be Patrick Ray. Patrick symbolizes my Irish heritage, also I'm fascinated by the Bronte family whose father and brother were named Patrick. He would have the same first initial as my brother Paul, who was a miscarriage, plus, as a bonus, honor my sister and aunt, both of whom have names which are forms of Patricia. Ray is hubby's middle name, plus the first initial of my grandfather's name, Ratha. I too love names, I'm just fascinated by them. I bought my first name book when I was 10 and have been collecting them ever since. I've also compiled a book of Celtic names, maybe one day I'll publish it. I just love when parents think about what they're naming their children (and authors their characters), instead of just throwing any name at them as an afterthought.

you and I are a lot alike. :) Thank you for sharing your daughter's name and thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. i love Holly Laraine. That is a beautiful name. Very sweet. I LOVE Anastasia Justine, too...it goes very nice together. You are right Anastasia does sound strong...brings up images of royalty and loyalty to me. I love patrick Ray, too and the way you came up with it. It encompasses so many important people in your life. What a wonderful tribute

we have 2 children who are well on the way to being adults. our daughter and eldest we called lorraine for 2 reasons one the french connection with joan of arc . and 2 the Uriah heep rock song called sweet lorraine .both favourites of ours. Our son we called fairly simply Neil. the reason behind this was there was not another neil in the family. and when i was a child my father sat with me and told me my uncle was the first man to walk on the moon.so my son may one day be the second of that name to walk on the moon

I was raised with an odd name Robin, it is not that unusual now but as a child they company my father worked for bought Christmas gifts for the employees kids if their names were listed. I remember getting a hockey stick and a toy car. because Robin in those days was a boys name and I was told I was named after an uncle.I like different names and my daughter is Lynnel, a friend named their daughter this and I asked where it came from the answer both mothers Lynn and Ellen, also My sons name is Scott Harper, My granddaughters name is Aubrey Gaylyn WAlker and my grandsons name is Duncan Joesph

Ahhh...that is horrible about that Christmas gift. LOL I can only imagine how much that mad you made being a kid. I like the name Robin, though. I had a friend in elementary school named Robyn. Lynnel is very cute and loves where it came from. And the name Harper is so unusual. I like that. Your grandkids names are precious, too. Thank you for sharing.

Our oldest is named Hunter Jakub - we knew that we wanted something different for our children so at the time he was born - no one had the first name Hunter and then we chose Jakub so we could spell it totally different. Our youngest is Kyler Christian - we also wanted his to be different - and found that the middle name we chose just seemed to fit well with his first name!!!

I love the way you spelled Jakub. So cute and Hunter is a great name. Kyler is just adorable! I love that name! A friend of mine from college named her son Christian...I have always liked that.

I have 4 kids, and their names are Kieran Alexander, Calvin Shayne, Seth Abrom, and Amber Aaliyah. My three boys were all named after someone special. My daughter, my hubby picked her name. We liked the way it sounds. I love unique names, and I think that the names you have chosen for your children are beautiful, and unique. And they sound nice, too. Picking a nice name is important; we are helping to shape our children's identity, when we chose what they will be known as.

Oh Chaygylmommy, how nice what you write.... I like Chayton and Gyllian very very much, what poetic names.... and poetic you have been to describe them.... Thank you, you taught me very interesting things about a culture that I consider the most unlucky culture in the world. The name of my beloved son is Giuliano (Julian), it comes from Latin Iulianus and Ancient Greek IoulianĂ²s. I decided to call him this way because of the name of the last Pagan empereor, Julian, a very right and honest man, the last defender of Paganism.
