Depression is an Illness

How long does will it take and how many lifes have to be lost before depression is realised to be an actual illness. There are still people out there who think that depression is as curable as bad mood. I speak from someone who knows. My father took his own life due to depression. It wasn't until after the fact that I should have seen the signs. I think more resources should be put into this as I do beleive that there can be a cure without just taking tablets that can opnly heighten the depression of get you addicted. What do you think?

You're right - depression IS an illness. It is a neurological disorder. Just as we don't expect someone with a brain tumor to "get over it" we shouldn't expect someone with depression to "get over it". I think more people are now recognizing that depression is a true illness. It is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Anti-depressents (at least the FDA approved) ones are not addictive. They correct the levels of chemicals in the brain so that the brain of a person with depression functions at the same levels as a person without depression. There are other ways to treat depression but the most effective and reliable way is through medication. You should be aware that depression is often genetic, so the fact that your father suffered means that you are more likely to suffer. That doesn't mean that you are "doomed" by any means, but you should be aware that you are more at risk so that if you start to suffer from depression you can get help before it becomes as severe as your father's was.

I would like to add that it is actually not "caused" by a chemical imbalance. They have found that in some individuals who suffer from depression there are different levels of certain neurotransmitters than those found in individuals not suffering from depression. Also it is not a neurological condition. It is treated as a mood disorder.

Most doctors DO treat depression as an illness. The sad thing is that society has put such a stigma onto it that many people just won't admit when they have gone beyond what the anti-depressive meds can help. I have a dear friend who lost her husband to depression, and she nearly took her own life as well. I'm sorry about your dad. Its a hard thing to deal with, but you have to realize that many people who are suffering, do so silently and those around them have no clue how very bad they are. Please don't blame yourself. It was nothing you could have foreseen.

I think depression is an illness in some ways. When it over takes your life and it doesn't look like there's nothing to live for anymore to one who is in depression, its an illness.

I don't depression is illness. Depression is a cause of someone that happend to him a very bad thing, and he just can't over it. Those people are very sensitive, and can get hurt very quickly. I think that the only way to get them out of their depression is by going out, and showing them the buty of this world. Make them forget about all the bad things that they have been threw. I don't what type of medicines there are for depression, and I don't know if they are realy helpful. I believe in human help, and to me is more reasonable that a person will get out of his depression by seeing and expriencing great things that our world has to offer.

I know what you mean. I have a few family members who suffer from depression. And I agree with you, I think it's an illness. And I think people want to blame the depressed person for their state of mind, when in actuality, it's something they can't control. I think people need to start realizing that it's an illness, and we need to start finding ways to help one another without judging one another.

Yes,one depressed person can be treated as ill, there r very much positive things in the world,in life,in nature.but they take only the negativities out of them. They are ill with respect to their mindset. They should be treated well, and should be beloved. The depressed persons should know that in the world they have not only work but love too(the thing to earn and to give). It is a curable disease.Best of luck to the families in which one or two depressed persons live.Be positive.

im really sorry to hear about your dad. they are finally starting to make depression known as the mental illness that it is. people suffer different levels and forms of depression but it still makes you feel just as bad... over here in australia, they have started providing more resources to tackle this problem and at least the doctors are treating it better nowadays. the medications have changed a lot in the past 10-20 years and (depending on what kind you are on of course) help the brain utilize its own chemicals more to help us feeling good. they arent as addictive as they were many years ago. there are possibly other things you can take to help your depression but as everyone is different you just have to find what works for you because it is a terrible thing to live with. people who suffer from it just need to reach out and ask for help from professionals so they can learn to manage it. and we as a society have to accept it and not treat sufferers as outcasts.

Agreed, it IS an illness, and most doctors/people will treat it as such. There are forms of depression that can be cured by just talking to a counsillor, and figuring things out. Of course there are stronger forms of it where it can take years to cure. It IS a curable illness. It's a chemical imbalance that a lot of people don't take seriously.. Which can lead to a lot of terrible things if it's not treated seriously, or properly, or if the person being treated by medications begins to abuse them.
