Can I professionally clear my computer out and "start over"?

My computer is about 3 years old. Is it possible to completly "start over" and have everything cleared out and re-install the programs? Will there be a benefit? Is there an alternative? My computer generally runs fine, but i think that there are some problems.

If it were me I would. Of course I blank my computer's hard drive every few months and re-install windows XP.

If it has some virus on it, then it would be a good idea to run a good Zero Drive program on it, but beware if you run a program like this is overwrite all of your hard drive's data making the data lost forever.
