I loved Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. I also loved the Silmarillion because it added so much to that world. I'm also a big fan of the Harry Potter series as well. My favorite fiction book of all times, however, is Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

I liked the Hobbit both as a book and the cartoon from the 1977. Both were really good. As for the Lord of the Rings, well, the 1st movie was pretty good but a little too violent for me.

Harry Potter is good, great even, but I don't think any of them even come close to the Lord of the Rings, or the Hobbit. Rowling may be a decent writer, but she is no Tolkien, she is the Steven King of the Fantasy genre, sure her books sell, sure they are even fairly well written, but they are the fast food of literature. So in summary I think it is obvious to one and all what my favourite book(s) is(are), its the Lord of the Rings by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. Also please take no offense to my comments on JK Rowling, I do think she is a wonderful writer, but I don't think she compares to Tolkien at all. Then again this is just my opinion, you are welcome to disagree, you'd be wrong, but your still welcome to disagree ;).
