Have you ever got a fish bone stuck in your throat?

Have you ever been eating and enjoying a fish meal when you felt you've got a fish bone stuck in your throat. You try to swallow but you can still feel it there. What do you do? I have heard a few suggestions for this: eat plenty of rice or maybe bread (something bulky but soft) to try to push it down; drink vinegar (supposed to dissole the bone?); put a finger down your throat and try to pick it out? Any other suggestions?

ouch! i cant imagine drinking vinegar just to dissolve the bone in our throught i think that too dangerous. our oldies thought us one thing only. if you have bone stuck on your mouth just eat banana in a way it can help push down the bone and its soft too. eat as many as you can until the bone will be removed. i had tried it in the past and it did help..

I will remember this banana remedy but if the bone is quite big and long and is deeply lodged in the throat, I believe it will still require professional help. Thanks for the input.

ive done it and wow its distubing, i had a feeling of a lump in my throat for about three weeks every time i tried to swallow. Eventually i went to the dr and she fiddled around in my mouth only to tell me she could see something but couldnt see what it was and sent me to a specialist. He told me what it was and plucked it out. He did it with a pair of tweezers, so now i know, tweezers and a mirror lol blessed be keep on posting

Oh my, it happens to cats too?! I thought with all their experience in eating fish they wouldn't have this happen to them. Poor kitty. Good thing you were brave enough to put your hand in to pull the bone out.

No matter what method is used, I am glad that you are okay and that the bone was successfully retrieved.

Let somebody massage it from the outside. We have a belief here that anybody who was born butt first are great in helping people having this problem. I should know, I was my grandma's favorite because of this :p

This is my first time hearing this remedy. We don't have this belief here but hey, when we have a bone stuck in our throat anyone who is willing to help is welcome - but, wouldn't massaging the throat aggravate the problem? Just wondering.

I was eating some catfish, fried of course, and next thing I know, I have a fishbone stuck in my tonsil. It was really painful, but I got some tweezers and pulled it out. It hurt more after that, for a few days actually. But I'm glad I got it out.

It's always a good idea to have a pair of long tweezers and a flashlight handy... and a sure-handed friend! :) I usually fillet and de-bone my own fish, but trout and salmon and smaller fish, seem to always have one or two hidden in reserve. The best way to prevent this annoying thing from happening was taught to me by my grandmother- "ALWAYS eat a piece of bread along with your fish, and you will never get a bone caught in your throat!" Somehow, it seems that the tongue will be able to detect the bones, if there is another texture in the mouth for the brain to compare it with, I guess...

Wow. I am so overly cautious when it comes to eating fish. I practically mash it into puree with my tongue before I swallow it. I have a great fear of swallowing fish bones. When I was a child I remember my mother making me swallow dry bread. Can't remember if it worked or not. I just remember the fear that I was going to die as a result of swallowing a bone.

It's a frightening experience isn't it? For me it's happened a few times not just once. So, I try to be very careful now since I like to eat fish. Thanks you for your contribution.

I had fish bone stuck inmy throat some years ago. It was stuck for over half an hour. To get it out, I swallowed lime juice (concentrated, straight from the lime itself) and it dissolved the bone. This is because of the acidity level in the juice which breaks down the bone. Believe me, it worked for me and it can work for you.

Thank you for the confirmation that lime (and vinegar?) can be used to dissolve the bone. Hope everyone will remember this and always keep lime or lemon handy.

Yes I have had a fish bone suck in my throat when I was very young, when I eat fish at any time I always have a slice of bread beside me just incase as this is a dreadful feeling and it really put me off eating any fish when this happened the first time. I do not know of any other way to do this but eating the bread has always solved this problem for me.

many times, and one time i was brought to the emergency room beacause the bone got stuck deep in my throat. I've done everything, i tried to eat a couple of bananas, drunk a gallon of water and let the cat scratch my neck ( its my grandma's advice - an old belief here in our country.

Poor you. So far the bones stuck in my throat eventually went down into my stomach (I surely hope so!) and I didn't have to go to the emergency. Once, I saw a show which related this woman's experience where she kept digging for the bone, but all that came out was blood - it was horrible. In the end she had to go to the emergency and was operated on to get the bone out. Ugh!!

yah.. and it hurts. i don't know what better way to do it but i just drink lots of water to push it down.. well, anyway the bone wasn't too big or anything so the water just washed it off. but really when that fish bone stuck down my throat.. i thought it would cut my throat down. since then i've been very careful eating fish.

That's good advice - indeed when all other household methods fail, head for the doctor's. Never risk our lives over a fish bone.

Preventions better than cure...so you'd rather be careful while eating fish (u can pick out the bones from the fish for a start) than trying to get rid of the bone stuck in your throat....and yes i too have been in a similar situation

I guess, much better to do is.. you eat banana. You bite a large slice of banana, and swallow it. It will be a big help if a fish bone stck in your throat. But if it is worst, better go to the nearest doctor.

Eating bananas is a new suggestion I have not heard of yet. It is a good idea provided I have bananas in the house at that point in time.
