I was playing basketball 2 weekends ago when I went in for a lay-up. I got challenged and had to change my shot. I landed awkwardly and sorta twisted my knee. I felt it give in as I fell to the floor. I've gotten injured so many times but I instantly felt this was different. When the swelling subsided a bit, I went to a doctor for an MRI. Yup, my worst fear was confirmed - I tore my ACL. Doctor said I need surgery but I'm afraid my knee won't be the same again in the sense that I'll always fear jumping and landing when I play. Will this injury heal itself after some time? Or do I really need to go under the knife?

I got bad news. An ACL tear is considered a permanent disability. ACL reconstruction is definitely necessary. Your knee will heal to about 95%. If you have time, you may wish to go for physiotherapy every week. Ask your doctor. If you are taking part in a tournament that is offically sanctioned, you will wish to claim disability compensation. Good luck for your reconstruction.
