Can having knee problems be due to other family members having knee problems?

I know that some health conditions can be the same among people in the same family but is having knee problems one of them? I know my mom has knee problems and needs knee replacements done in the near future and my dad had hip replacement done previously. I am wondering if my knee problems is because my parents had problems with their legs.

Anything is possible. It can run in the family. I have feet problems, and it runs in the family. However, it also can be from an injury or too much sitting. If it is very bad, I would encourage you to see a doctor to see exactly what is causing it. You seem kind of young, but when we age, it also wears our cartlige down in the knees too, causing pain.

Oh,yea. I am living proof of that. My mom had bad knees as did her mother and sisters. My sister just had a double knee replacement and was told by her doc that it was genetic.I am also having severe problems with my knees and will eventually have to have them replaced so it is probably the same with you.

If your mom and dads joint problems are caused by arthitis, you have a good chance of having it too. Do things now to protect your joints, this includes excercise, calcium. Talk to your doctor about other ways to protect and strenghthen your joints. BTW Happy Valentines day to you.

Happy Valentines Day to you as well and hope you are having a wonderful day. I have been outside scraping the ice and snow off my car and driveway as well as helping my neighbor. Thank you for your advice. I do exercise daily and take vitamins. My pain isn't constant as it comes and goes.

Happy Valentines Day to you as well Joy and hope that you have a wonderful day. I did not go to work today because of the ice storm that we had. Thank you for sharing this with me as this is how I was feeling about it but wanted to get a more definitive answer.

Some things are inherited, but not all knee problems are inherited. I have had knee problems since I was 17. I have had 7 knee surgeries. Mine were due to sports and being a Forester. Basketball and softball tore my knees up. my Mother has had one knee replaced but it was due to old age and wear and tear on the knee joint and cartilage. Every step we take, obesity, injuries, etc. causes knee problems. So for it to be inherited may not be true. I have 2 brothers, one was in all kinds of sports and he does not have any knee problems. The older brother is just now beginning to have cartilage problems due to a few injuries. Most knee problems are self sustained or from old age.

I played a lot of sports when I was younger so maybe this could have something to do with it. My brother and sister are healthy and do not have knee problems. I am 36 so it is probably not old age that is giving me the problems but am doing whatever I can to make sure it does not get worse.

I think it does run in families. If parents have it, you chances of having knee problems are greater than the average person. That is terrible isn't it. Hope your knee problems are not too bad.

I really dont know about the knee.I was reading a member response and she said yea.Well i am having knee problems right about now. When i walk up the steps my knees hurt real bad,but i dont know of anyone in my family that has the problem. I am only 31 and i would hate to have arthiritis. My grandmother suffers with that but not in her knee.

Maybe...having the tendency for bad knees might run in families. My father had a knee replaced. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and they are getting progressively worse. They are no longer straight, and they cause me pain and they sometimes pop and the bones grind together. And one of my sisters thinks she needs a knee replaced also...so who knows?

Hi. It could possibly be hereditary. I think it has to do with the way your bones are formed. I have arthritis in my legs and so does my other family members. I was in a car wreck when I was younger and my family seems to believe that is why I have leg problems, but I do not think it is due to the wreck at all. I think it is hereditary.

I have such bad knees it was actually criteria I looked for int he father of my children: he needed good, slid knees. It is very much hereditary, like any other genetic trait.
