Should parents that choose to homeschool their children be more or less regulated? Why or why not? Also do you know anyone that does homeschool, how does that effect your answer to this question. Also what is your personal opinion of the schools we have today in reguards to public education?

I think that it should be mildly regulated but thats it..I think that whoever is goin to regulate it needs to realize that there are various types of homeschooling ranging from very structured to UNschooling which is what i did and it worked out beautifully...I also feel that more public school boards should grant access to homeschooling caregivers to resources etc rather than turning their backs on them which unfortunately DOES happen... I would never attempt to homeschool here in NY State because the regulations are just INSANE and I dont agree with them at ALL...monitoring is good provided you do it from a distance AND are aware of the differnet methods...trying to force the parents to do it a certain way almost defeats the purpose of homeschooling in some ways really....

That's kinda what I think. I really think homeschooling should not be regulated at all. And that parents who do choose to homeschool should be given the money back from their taxes or something that would of went to pay for their childs education if they were in public education. (or at least a portion of what would of been spent) Also easy access to any classes that the school has the parent may want to have their child take. And since the parent would get the money back from the state for the education that their child is not recieving they could pay a small fee or buy their own books.

the books really arent that pricey depending on where you live...I was still in Canada when I homeschooled my kids and Chapters (Canadian equivilent to Borders here in the U.S) actually gave me a teachers discount which was nice..plus there are so many cheap resources online too..but even so, I do agree that a tax refund would be nice LOL especially since they rob ya blind here in NY.. I think the only reason I can see for regulating would be to make sure the child/children ARE actually being taught..I know there are som parents out there that claim to be homeschooling but dont teach the children at all..thats damaging and should be put to a stop IMO

I was homeschooled as a child, and am now homeschooling my children. Where I live is one of the easiest states to homeschool in. I would never want to be tied to standardized testing as a way of proving intelligence and learning. We as a society understand that not every 12 month old is going to be the same developmentally, so why don't we realize that with our older children? We need to relax and quit worrying so much about "peer level" and "grade level" and focus on whether that individual child is learning to the best of their ability, and the things they will need to live in this world. That is something most public schools have no clue of. I personally think that a minimum level of regulation is all thats needed. Parents who homeschool badly tend to parent badly as well, so therefore will have other obvious issues. I believe the government has entirely too much control over our everyday lives as it is, without letting them have a stronger hold on how we as parents choose to educate our children. I apologize for the mini-book, this is a subject close to home! :)

Her in Ohio we need to send in the Notification of homeschooling. We also include the California Achievement test for both of them and then we get a letter to carry with us if we are out and about during school hours. I think that is enough. We prove the learning and so we are doing fine. There are some that that would catch that do not tend to the educational needs of the kids. It should be a real easy process for those of us that prove our progress.

Yes, homeschooled people need to have some regulations. I am a private school teacher and have had many kids come in from homeschooling. I have seen it done very well and seen it done awfully! I think they need to be regulated so that they are doing basically what other kids in their gradeare doing, keeping them on par. Some join school after a few years of homeschooling and are either way behind or way ahead. Way ahead is ok but behind is not. I know lots of people from my church that homeschool. They wnat to keep bad influences away from their kids or want to have more control over their child's learning. I think that there are gerat school, mediocre schools and bad schools out there. I plan to send my kid to my school next year because I know its great. I think its the parents job to research the schools in their own area and draw their own conclusions as to the right education for their own child. They know their kid best. Thsi is whyI suport vouchers too.
