Dogs are indeed a humans best friend! and that has always been the way I have trained my dogs, as a best friend, and lots of praise! Back when I was a kid, we held the leach in both hands to train our dog(s). it was to keep the pet on a short leash, until they were used to walking on the leash. gradually when they got used to this, we woud extend it, and allow them the full leash, and one hand. while training, we always kept the dog to our side and walked along with it (this prevented dragging)also, teaching how to walk on a leash leads to teaching how to sit, stay still, and eventually roll over.
oh yes! and fetch! Now, if only cats worked the same way...

I firmly believe in leash training. What I don't agree with is crate training.
We say that our dogs are like our children but we would never lock our kids in a cage especially over night!
Cats can be trained too (look at movies with cats in them) but it is much harder to do cause they don't care about pleasing their owners as much as dogs do.
Take care
