As travel becomes more affordable and the cost of technology devices drop I find more and more passengers using electronics on airplanes. Should passengers be allowed to fly and use all of their electronic devices including cell phones, mp3 players, laptops, and gps devices.

Not using electronic gadgets is just a myth. It has been tested and nothing has happened. Even on gas stations where the use of cellphones affects the electronics of the gas pump is untrue. The electronics of both devices work in different waves and frequencies. They're just too paranoid about it. In the gas station it's even riskier to watch tv, turn on the radio or even use your intercom because all of those devices also run on frequencies but what makes them dangerous is that they use electrical current from sockets. On planes, I don't get it? They have internet connection, a phone pay booth on the business class section and yet they're not allowing passengers to use their own devices? I guess the plane designers weren't that smart when they forgot that radio frequencies will affect their instruments!?

Its pretty obvious that if we are told by the 'experts' not to use the electrical equipment there is a reason for it.....what is the point in risking??? its a blessing not to use the blimin' things for a few hours and we're talking about lives here. to switch off does everyone good.

Some devices emit radio signals that can affect the equipment within the flight deck. Notably, mobile phones, even when you aren't talking on a mobile phone, if it is left on standby then the handset will automatically try to connect to the nearest base station therefore it emits signals. You may also note that many hospitals forbid the use of such equipment because they can affect medical devices. However, technology is progressing fast and some airlines such as Ryanair in Ireland will be allowing passengers on some flights to use mobiles in the future when planes are fitted out with specialist equipment. With regards to other electronic devices, I really am not so sure, there are many websites for example, where people post video they've taken during take off and landing, I've taken photo's myself, ensuring that the flash doesn't go off. Personally I believe that for devices that don't emit radio signals, the reason you are forbidden from using the devices is down to safety. Take off and landing are the most complex parts of the flying process, and people need to be alert to what is going on around them, not transfixed by a video game. If anything untoward did happen then people have a much better chance of escaping. It's like when flying at night, they dim the lights on landing, it's so you're eyes are accustomed to the conditions outside of the plane, that way anything bad happens you're eyes don't have to adjust to the darkness. In accidents every second counts.
