Chinese New Year

At the nursery where I work a member of staff had helped the children to make lanterns and pig masks to help them learn about Chinese New Year. The head teacher asked them to remove the pigs from the disply in case it offended any Muslims in the school. As the school has a majority of children who come from backgrounds where no religion is practised, do you think she was right to ask for the display to be removed?

Religion? Considering that Chinese New Year has absolutely nothing to do with religion, I don't see how it could offend anyone, including Muslims, on that grounds, unless you're going to forbid the eating of beef or something equally ridiculous. If Chinese New Year would offend anyone, it would be other Asians - Koreans, Mongolians, etc. - because they also celebrate the "Lunar New Year."

Thanks for your reply. I really didn't think it should offend anyone, it was just to make the children aware of a different culture. I wasn't aware of the Lunar New Year, thnks for the information.

I would just like to say "hahahahaha". How ridiclious. Well, for a start, she must be very stupid to think that it would offend Muslims because they weren't killing or eating the pigs were they? And what about the Chinese people she would be offending for asking for the things to be removed? Is it ok to offend the Chinese but not Muslims. And what about a Chinese Muslim? As the other person said, it is nothing to do with religion, it is part of Chinese culture and there is no reason why it shouldn't be celebrated. We don't ask for candles and things to be taken down for Diwali do we? This is the stupid PC brigade thing. Well, I am offended by windows because my brand new made up religion says they are evil so I want all windows to be bricked up because I don't want to see them!

It will be very dark in your religion but it shows how ridiculous things are getting.
