What is your favorite thing to knit?

I'm willing to admit taht my knitting experience is quite basic. I've never completed a sweater or any other large project. It could be because I am lazy, am afraid to try something major, or just delight in tiny projects. Or maybe it's because I can't get passed socks. I love to knit to knit socks. In fact, they are my absolute favorite thing to knit. How about you other knitters? Is there any one kind of project you find yourself going back to over and over again because you like it so much?

This is a toss up. I make hooded baby sweaters that zip up the back. These are made as gifts to expectant mothers and for 1st birthdays too. They usually take me no longer than a weekend to complete. The second is 2-needle mittens. I have made so many that I no longer need to follow the pattern. I can make them any size without a guide.

They do have a seam up the side and thumb. I have a pattern that is over 30 years old.

2 needle mittens? How interesting. Does that mean that they have a seam in them? Where did you get the pattern?

I can definitely relate to the instant gratification thing. I knit a cabled wool hat for my hubby over the weekend - cast on about noon on Saturday, done by 2ish on Sunday - even without constant knitting! :) I don't know that I could pick one particular thing I *love* to nit above all others, though. Like you, I've never knit a sweater...more because I'm usually too impatient to do a gauge swatch than because of size, though. My "favorite" thing to knit shifts with what I've been doing too much of, I guess - for example, I realized over the weekend that I *really* want to do something in stranded multicolor knitting because I've done SOOOO much cabled stuff lately (lots of cabled holiday gifts this year). I also like knitting lace - I really like knitting "tiny", and lace is pretty inexpensive, even if you decide to do, say, a huge shawl in good wool - that huge shawl will probably only take 1 or 2 balls of the $25.00 a ball yarn and take six months to knit! :) I've said that if finances ever got *really* tight, then I'd spend $20.00 on crochet cotton and be set for a year. :) So...I guess the short answer is - my favorite depends. On my mood, my recent projects, etc. My apologies for prattling on so long, and if you get here, thanks for sticking with it! :):) ~Sara

Oh - also - just because you knit small things doesn't mean it's all that basic! You Can fit all sorts of cool knitting techniques into pretty small projects - like socks! :)

I've been playing with the idea of making my first pair of cable socks. Problem is that I keep seeing self striping yarn and I want to try that too. Oh, all this talk about knitting makes me want to start another pair of socks. I'll have to check out my stash and see what I have around. Thanks for the great post though. I'll have to think of new ways I can make my little projects more interesting.

I enjoy almost every kind of knitting, from lace to super bulky jackets, but if I had to choose one thing, it would be socks. There's enough of a challenge and variation to keep it interesting, but the basic pattern is simple enough to not be scary. And they work up fast enough to make me feel as if I've done something.

Exactly how I feel about socks. In fact, I even casted on a new pair of slipper socks last night. I have half of the first sock done already because I just couldn't stop!

Right now, I'm really enjoying knitting wristwarmers and mittens. Sometimes it's hats, other times it's little things like finger puppets. (Those are definitely instant gratification - cast on at 2pm, done at 2:30) I'm wary of sweaters because they take a lot of yarn and I'm not sure how it'll turn out.

I've never tried finger puppets. What a great idea though. I have a little sister who would probably love some of those. Especially if I can make one that looks like a princess.

My "favorites" tend to go in phases. Sometimes I'm really into arm warmies, and I make a whole mess of those. Sometimes it's felted bags or bowls. Other times I'm into making different types of scarves. I really like scarves for traveling. I find they are the most portable project. Right now I have 2 scarves going in fact, one that is more basic, easy to knit while watching tv, and the other, more complicated, with a bigger "wow" factor. I sell a lot of my knitting, so sometimes I have custom orders and have to put aside what I want to make to do those orders. But it's not so bad, it's still kniitting :-)

Baby booties. I have them stashed everywhere, in all different styles, colours, different wool. You name it, I probably have baby booties in that colour! Other than that, just baby clothes in general...I'm too lazy to knit adult items (other than scarves). My current project is like a patchwork baby blanket, knitting squares in 4-ply to sew together....probably never to be completed!!

I have a personal rule. I never knit two of the same things in a row. So if I just knit socks, I'll switch to hat, then to a scarf. That way I never get stuck in a rut. If I were good at socks, I think that would be my favorite. But I have so often finished one sock and got bogged down on sock 2. Sometimes I wish humans only had one foot. I'm knitting a tam right now in five colors. The book I got is not helping, because the chart is in black and white for a five color hat. So it's practically useless. But if I was good at tams, I'd love making lots of them.

My mother tried to teach me how to knit. It didn't work out so well. She was right-handed and I was trying to learn lefty and it was driving her crazy. I would dearly love to learn though.

Well, I'm really new to knitting, so I'm just sticking to scarves right now. I don't have to figure out how to add or drop stitches or follow a pattern, it's just cast on and go until I like the length! Although, if anyone has any really simple ideas, I would be interested in trying something new! I basically only know how to cast on, knit, and purl stitches, but I'd love to try a really easy beginner tank top or shawl/wrap or something.

I don't really have a favorite item as in hat, scarf, etc. My favorite things to knit are things for other people that I just know they're going to love - a dress for my daughter, a sweater for a good friend and a shawl for my mother-in-law come immediately to mind. None of them were very fun projects, but I knew what their reactions would be and looked forward to them...so it made the whole project more enjoyable, if that makes sense. In this same vein, I just love baby projects, because the mommies-to-be always love them. If my knitting makes somebody happy, it makes me happy too.

well my favorite thing to knit is a big fluffy blanket i do not think there is anything warmer than a blanket that has been knitted especially when you use really soft yarn and i am cold natured so i use blankets all year round i have tried knitting a sweater before i am still in the process of finishing it it is just taking a really long time and alot of yarn i would like to eventually learn to knit socks for that is something i have never tried to knit before
