Has anyone realized that the name Dharma is on each hatch? What do you think the whole idea behind the Dharma initiative is; and what does that word mean in a literal sense?

Since the beginning when we found out about the Dharma Initiative, I've felt it is all about psychological and behavioral experiments. Dharma may be an acronym for something but I recently looked it up to see if there is an origin to the word. There is. 1 Hinduism: an individual's duty fulfilled by observance of custom or law 2 Hinduism & Buddhism a: the basic principles of cosmic or individual existence: divine law b: conformity to one's duty and nature This makes reasonable sense considering the Initiative was to apparently observe one's behavior as seen by the monitors in the different bunkers. The question is, who was watching who? Staying with the theme of the origin of this word, you can also come to the assessment that the Other's we're also a part of this but at a later date. I highly doubt they were involved in the beginning of the Dharma Initiative, except perhaps Ben, if he's telling the truth that he was born on the island. My guess is that the Others have lost control of their sanity and have gone rogue with their sick psychological and behavioral experiments. Who knows? That's a wild stab in the dark. ‹(°¿°)›

Jumpinjack.... you are very close! I thought it would be a good discussion because there is an answer to this if you dig deep enough. Definitely a smart stab in the dark Jack! I share your opinion about the "others"; they have lost control and taken things overboard in a way.

There's no doubt about that. I believe it all started with good intentions. After some time of being on the island they started going stir crazy and began looking for new study subjects. Along came our unfortunate Losties and the Others found themselves a whole new batch of lab rats.

I have no idea dude... But I would like to know also. Is it an abbreviation for something?? Or maybe it's just a quirky thing that they put in for people like us to discuss why? hahaha. It wouldn't be the first time on a TV series they did that. lol

Yes, I noticed that the name is on each hatch. I think the Dharma initative is a science experiment that initiates a situation and the test subjects have to work their way out of it. Have you noticed that the symbol also looks like a web or a maze?? I have no idea if the name can be translated into something else. Dharma may be the name of the most insane scientist who originally set up this island and the hatches.
