Did you know that there is a cooperative county/state extension office that is available to you at no cost . It is only available in the United States but some of the info will be great no matter where you live. This agency has info on preserving food, gardening, growing vegetables and fruit trees and other thing for your area. Each agency has updated material available for your particular area. There are many things that are the same for all areas but some are very different. The best time to plant veggies varies in different zones.
We use our county extension office all the time. They put out a calendar each year. This calendar tells the best day to prune your fruit trees and yard shrubs like rhododendrons. It tells you went to plant garlic and other garden veggies. It also tells you when the best time to start indoor seeds for your garden plants like tomatoes.
All of this information is free . It is no longer necessary to purchase an expensive book to find out how to plant a garden or how to raise a cow. You can browse by subject . Subjects are:
Agricultural and food insecurity
Agricultural systems
Animals and animal products
Economics and Commerce
Education
Families Youth and communities
Food, Nutrition and health
International
Natural Resources and Environment
Pest Management
Plants and Plant Products
Technology and Engineering
Each subject has tons of sub subjects and lots of information is available
Under Food, Nutrition and Health, it has 17 sub subjects, including:
Obesity and healthy weight
Organic Agriculture
Food Safety
Nutrition
Pesticides
And many more sub subjects and they are all available online.
It is just filled with info. Our local extension agency does not have a site online but many agencies do. This main web site has tons of info that anyone can use. This link will take you to the main site. http://www.csrees.usda.gov/Extension/

You would think there would be a local one where I am, but all I could find after a very brief search was one in Morgantown, WV. I will try again later. Thank you for reminding me of this. I really enjoyed the calender when I had one many years ago~Donna

Donna, I think that every county in West Virgina has one. We have one our county and all the neighboring counties as well. Morgantown is over all the county ones though. What county do you live in?

You have provided me with another wonderful link. Just from what you have put in your post here I can tell that I will be using this link often. I am putting this in a safe place so that I can find it again.

I did not put near all the information that is available in my discussion. The site has so much more info. The page at the link will help you find one in your area also. They have lots of publications available for free.

I use the extension agency for information. They are great! I have gotten good recipes and canning information. I like the sponsorship of the 4H students and what I learn from the kids as well.

Yes, It sponsers the 4 H clubs here too. In West Virginia, there is a local office in every county. They are great to come and give free seminars to my low income clients. I have them to come each spring and do a gardening seminar and in the fall, they do a canning and drying seminar. They do it for free and they also test your canner pressure gauge to be sure it is working correctly. All their servicees are free.
We have even had our soil tested to see if it needs any nutrients added.

I tried to contact them to see why there was no 4-H program at our school, but could not get anyone in the office. I fifure it is because it is a 'City' school. I still feel that the kids would benefit from it. I did not know they were such a wealth of information. i will check it out more, thanks for the link! =o}

I have heard of this office before but have never checked into it, thanks for the link I am going to check into it because it sounds like a ton of information I would be interested in. I'm guessing we don't have one in my town but most likely will in the state capital, Lansing.

We do have an Extension office in town. They seem so happy when someone walks in to the office there. They do have information and can also direct you to where you can find that which you seek. The town is pretty forward thinking so I will have to do and see if ours is online. I would think so. We also have a farm bureau here and they might be able to help us rebuild!! Grand resource there for us to access. Thanks for sharing it here.
