I need your advice on the following: On Saturday a couple of the neighbor kids came over to play with my dogs and one of them a little 6 year old girl asked when she saw me working on my computer did you lose your computer the other day? I had no idea what she meant, she went on to say her Daddy did so he borrowed yours, I'm still clueless, then she said but you have to leave your door (my sliding glass one) open. So please leave your door open. I was still clueless so I said sure. Now I am wondering what could her father have been doing?. They are nice people so I don't want to cause any problems by asking them so I'm asking you! What could be going on???

My son and my husband are computer technicians and they were able to tell that my next door neighbour or somebody close was using our wireless connection as it showed up on the computer. We have only three computers and there was a 4th one logged in. I didn't think it was any harm, but my son explained that they could start download stuff and I would have to pay if it went over the limit. They have since put a password on so only our own computers can use the connection. I think it would be best to get a password on yours as you could find yourself with a hefty bill.

If there is a Router on the computer it will allow you to share your Internet access. http://www.usr.com/education/net7.asp

Do you have a router? If you do and it's not closed, then anyone can pick up your internet (within a certain distance) and use your connection. It works much the same as in a hotel that offers internet services. This possibly could be what the little girl meant, that her dad was using your signal to connect to the web.

Yes I do. I thought it was only because I have Comcast and use it for my TV and my PC

The only way is if you have a router for wireless in your home. Then anyone can get internet through you if they can get up to the range to reach it. Which would account for why you would have to have your sliding door open. Because the glass was probably interfering and making it more difficult to reach the signal from your wireless network. He may even have some sort of an antenna or something to try to get an even better signal.

I would have told you the same as your first response. There are ways to make your server secure, but I do not know exactly how. Mostly, for me I think it is harmless. When I first got my laptop I had access, not consistently, from the local real estate office.

Sounds to me like he got into your house and was on your computer. You should check the history of visited sites for that day and see if there are any on there that you didn't visist. I would do that first before confronting the neighbor.

As for me, i don't think it is about your neighbour tap into your router as router still can send signal if the sliding door is closed. Now the little girls said that keeping your sliding door open so that her dad can come in. That's mean some one have been using your pc! Yeah i also think you have to check your internet history and check whether someone have been using it. One thing you have to know that history can be deleted so you have to bear it in mind. Hope this will help. Thanks

I think the best way if you have the router is you make a secure internet connection. By making a password for accessing it. Usually restaurant and coffe shop will have this secure online WIFI for their customer. You should secure yours.

Honey, my advise is a little different. I would confront this man, and don't worry about having problems. But, in a nice way, not in a mean way to put him on the defense. Let us know what happens. Good luck.

I would put a password on your system. And casually mention to your neighbours that you've heard of so many hackers/trojan horses/problems with open signals that you've upped your security. Then helpfully tell him that he should do the same with his, so that people can't see into his computer. What probably happened is that his internet wasn't working, so he tapped into yours. I've had a similar problem, and when I look at the wireless signals from my laptop, I can see my neighbours signals. Also, before we passworded ours, one of our neighbours took over our printer and sent us a message saying that he could see our computer and could break into it, and told us how to close it. And make sure your sliding door is securely closed. My grandparents put a piece of wood into the space beside the door so that you can't force it open.

That is so creapy! I asked hubby and he, like the first poster, thinks it's the router they are doing it with. I would just ask him for half of the cost of your internet.

If you have a wireless server that's not password protected then your neighbour could download some very unpleasant stuff from the internet and it would be registered to your computer, he could also be able to read what's on you computer hard disk as well, possibly get passwords and user names as well for some of the sites you use. What you should do is set up encryption preferable 128 byte, (if available) otherwise 64 byte, also change your SSID (Service Set identifier) as most people use the default value. http://techdir.rutgers.edu/wireless.html give details about what is needed (may be a bit complicated). Make sure your door is firmly closed.

Internet Connection - This world become very easy to reach through the internet connection. People are so advance this days, and everything becomes easier.
Ask your provider of the internet connection my friend. He/she might be able to ease your mind. Because there's always a chance one may use other's connection WITHOUT any intention of stealing. (I've never done this before), but I can always see my neighbours' line on my wireless connection. lol

I would guess he is using your computor to do something on it or he is wanting to find out what is on your computor. I would do as the little girl asked and find out what he is doing on your computor. That is not very nice of someone to come in your house and use your computor. I would be cautious about it too. Never know they may seem nice but may not be.

better keep your internet password protected or you can ask your service provider to register your connection to the modem.. so that nobody can use that connection other than you...

We don't know what exactly the child was saying. We cant say what she mean by that.So better keep your window close and keep your pc locked by using password at the start up.You said he is a good person then you should not suspect him till you catch him redhanded.Be good with him.
