I could never be a Buddhist

Before I say anything- this is not a discussion against Buddhism or Buddhists. I have nothing against them at all!!! I could never be a Buddhist cause I would drive myself nuts trying to reach enlightenment. I would never get there. The reason why - I can't stop wanting. I want a house of our own. I want a new car. I want my son to be healthy and whole. I want sleep. I want, I want, I want. As you can see I would never reach that state of enlightenment and it would just make me crazy. Well at least I know my limitations. So how about you? (I would also love to hear from any Buddhists here) Thanks in advance for your replies.

I am a Buddhist BUT my path is geared to a modern western world rather than a traditional Eastern one.....Buddha was a very wise man who really had it nailed on how ppl should coexist in this world...being mindful, having loving kindness to those around you (all living things I must add) including yourself...and numerous other things are all attainable...I want stuff all the time..I'm a spoiled freakin brat when I want to be LOL...but that doesnt mean I'm unable to live a Buddhist life...living without desire doesnt have to mean living without anything...in todays world it just wouldnt work LOL BUT living with the realization that we CANT have everything we want and accepting that reality is very possible......being open hearted, open minded and accepting of everyone is very possible in todays world....being mindful of your actions, thoughts and words though difficult at times especially in the Western world, is very possible and doable..being mindful of your surroundings is too...taking time each day to be still in mind, body and soul is also something we can and should all do..... I couldnt be JUST LIKE Buddha either, I have grown far too accustom (and more than that my kids have) to having the conviniences in life but that doenst mean being Buddhist is impossible....its a philosophy of life and living and that is available to everyone...its just up to us to acknowledge and act accordingly...

Awesome! I am happy that a Buddhist spoke up. Many of Buddha ideas are very similar to many other religions in regards how to treat others. I try to treat others well. My problem is that I can deal with wants but when they become a source of sadness .... well.... I wish you all the best in your journey through life

first of all there is nothing wrong with wanting. budhist want things too. for example they want to reach enlightenment. i for ne could never be a budhist because it's not in complience to my creeds. but nothing is impossible if you really want to; especially something that is entirely up to you.

I don't want to be Buddhist; it just dawned on my today that I couldn't if I wanted to. The thing about wanting - well Buddhists try to eliminate suffering. They say that wanting causes suffering (it is true you know). Eliminating desire eliminates suffering.

That's an interesting point (eliminating desire eliminates suffering). I think human nature dictates that you desire things - who doesn't like food? We need food to survive, and so surely we want food? The point lends itself to hypocriticism - if you aren't supposed to desire things, then how can you ever possibly willingly reach enlightenment. Surely you would be desring this, so a contradiction would be made?

I feel pretty much the way you do. There are a lot of things about Buddhism I find attractive. And sometimes I do think that if I could live without wanting more than I have then I would be happier. In fact I know I would be happier, because my unfulfilled wants have brought me a lot of pain. But then I think, well, if I was at total peace with myself and the world around me and I didn't want anything more, what incentive would I have to go out and achieve things? I don't actually want to give up wanting more. If I gave up wanting more, I might as well just lie down and die. Because if I don't want more, then I'll never get more. And if it's a good thing like love or health then I want to believe in it, and value it, and long for it, and yearn after it, even if it's impossible and even if it hurts me. Some things are more important even than happiness. Life is not supposed to be peaceful. There's plenty of time for tranquillity when it's over.

see I dont look at it like that....my incentive to go out and continue on at this point in life is to help others...I guess I'm at a stage in life though where sure I want things but I dont HAVE to have them...I've got my health (for the most part LOL), love both inner and out and peace...I dont need "stuff" ya know....mind you I've also had to live without "stuff" including not having a roof over my head so material things really dont mean much..sure I love having it but I dont NEED it, I wont go to outrageous lengths (like being a workaholic for example) in order to get more stuff....make sense? To me if we live only to aquire things, material items and such THEN we should just lay down and die because IMO we are living for all the wrong reasons....Life IS supposed to be peaceful but that doesnt mean it should be from birth..we arent entitled to it, we have to work for it and by suffering we learn alot about the world around us and the world inside us..its the HANGING ON TO suffering that we should be stopping... I've been through some horrible things in my life and I hung on to that pain for so long and it was defeating me and killing me really...dealing with, healing from and ultimately letting go of that suffering has put me in a totally different mental place....I dont think any of us want to live with our pain, our suffering forever...problem is, ppl are too afraid to let it go....

I really respect Buddhists. I don't agree that life can't be filled with joy, contentment and peace. I think each must find their own path to travel to get there. Buddhism isn't my path.

Huh, I have no religion, but once I wanted to know more about Buddhism. I like the philosophy, like this one "If God would be your neighbour and you wouldn`t want to live with him, than why do you believe in this God". I really like the idea of no God, just your karma, the things you have done in your life (the idea about the past life, nop, still don`t believe). There are points that are reasonable and democratic. Like the fact you can become a Buddhist monk but you are free to quit any time. In conclusion I want to say that this religion is more like an lifestyle and set of rules you should follow in life. If I had no choise but to follow an religion, I would choose Buddhism. (but there are some rules about eating meat, I don`t know much about those rules, but it would be really hard to become a vegitarian)

Thanks for you answer. I like the idea of God but it is your choice not to believe. I won't judge you by it. If I had to choose a religion it would be what I am - a Christian.

I would love to be a budhhist if holding two relions was possible because i don't want to leave my present religion which is an integral part of my existence. I fully identify with the teachings of Lord Gautam Buddha. It's the most simple relion to follow.Only difficulty is to totally forego your desires. But atleast we can try limiting them. Even during abstinence practice you are asked to do that.Kindly correct me if i am wrong. And yes there is no denying the fact that we are becoming more greedy with the flooding of more and more attractive products in the market apart from the usual want of house, car, clothes, jewellery etc.

And you should not.wanting your son's heart to heal without violating it with surgery is the most natural feeling for anyone, leave alone the mother. Its not wanting. Its not desire which the religion in question means. My heart reaches out to you for going through such a testing time. My best wishes are with you and your lovely son.

I can't correct you as I am not a Buddhist so I don't know everything there is to know. I can't forgo my desires. I am not greedy in the least. I could care less what the Jones are doing. I would like a house of our own. I don't want anything big, just one more bedroom as we only have two and need one more. I don't want fancy cars, I only want one that is safe and reliable. In fact I was thinking of buying a new car but decided instead to repair mine and look at buying one next year. I don't wear nor want much jewelry. I hardly ever buy new clothes and when I do it is not name brand. The one thing that I do want more than anything if for my son's heart to heal without needing open heart surgery!!! I don't think I would ever be able to stop wanting that.

I couldn't be a Buddhist either. I don't like statues so I couldn't go to temple. I know I wouldn't reach enlightenment because I am too angry and I like material things.Because I couldn't be a Buddhist, I trully respect Buddhists.

Oh you sin all the time anyway - you just don't realize it most of the time. That is the way most of us are so don't sweat it.

No, don't think I could be either. It's not that I really want a lot but I do want little things, like you a house of my own again, but I want to be able to go out to dinner if I feel like it and not feel quilty if I go to McDonalds (sounds good, may do that tonight).
