I always just washed my babies things in the machine with my clothes. I use standard soap but I did always do the extra rinse to try and be sure there wasn't soap left on the clothes.
But I wash their night clothes seperate and don't use fabric softner because the fabric softner interfers with the flame retardent they treat the clothes with.

If you wash in hot water, the water kills germs. I know this because I wash cloth diapers ;) With regular clothes, I use perfume free stuff because our skin is sensitive. If you use bleach, it will break down the fibers in the clothes and they won't last as long, and I'm sure many parents can tell you they go through enough clothes as it is and they don't want that to happen!

I've never used anything other than washing powder in the machine and sometimes a bit of stain remover when needed. I don't think anything else is needed. I was clean enough as a child when my mum did that with my clothes so why would it be any different for the next generation?

I wash my kids clothes in gain laundry soap. It smells good and leaves the clothes feeling soft. My kids skin is sensitive. So I have to be very careful with what I use.
