Cats: Why does she throw up so much??

I got my cat when she was very little and she has always been a small cat. I fed her kitten dry food for quite a while and when I tried switching it over all she does is throw the food up. Now shes at least a year too old for kitten food and I am on a budget. So I bought grown up kittie food that is the same type as the kitten food, but just for grown ups. It's the same size, shapes, etc. Last night she threw it up, I bought alot of the food so she needs to eat it. How long will it be until she can down it??

There could be a few reasons why she is throwing up the food. One is that she is just not use to the food and her body needs to adjust to it. You might need to mix her old food with her new food and little by little put more of the new food in her bowl. Another reason is if she's throwing up right after she eats she could be eating too fast. My cats have done that in the past. My vet explained to me that throwing up right after she eats is normal, she is just eating way too fast. Another reason is she is eating too much at one time. The dry food tends to blow up in the stomach from the liquid and it might be too much food in her stomach. Try taking a piece of the dry food and put it in water and see how much bigger it gets. You might want to try to put less in her bowl but feed her more times a day. Hope this helps.

my cat is 3 years old and every once in a while she throws up. Always with a full stomach and always on my car :-) The vet said it is nothing to worry about. It took her a while to transition from kitten food to adult food also but she finally accepted the adult food. Now we can buy whatever is cheapest and she eats it fine.

if she throws up in the car, that is called motion sickness, and really doesn't have anything to do with food.

not IN the car, ON the car. When i get home my cat sits and lays on the car most of the time. If she gets sick she throws up ON top of the car or on the fender.

Pets do not know the value of hunger and the master(mistress). Street cats starve for days and when they see a morsel of food, they jump like real lions (their ancestors).

My kitten (he's now 8 months old) is a very easy eater, he'll eat anything (I honestly mean anything), but some brands don't agree with him at all. There's one brand (a French supermarket home brand) which made him sick every time he ate it, so we stopped buying it for him and he hasn't vomited since. We also considered the fact that perhaps we were giving him too much food in one go (dry and wet food) so we started giving him smaller portions throughout the day (just like we did when he was very small) and that helped too. He's now much slower when he eats (he used to try and inhale everything in one go) and like I said, he hasn't vomited in over a month whereas before it used to be several times a day. Good luck with your cat, it's very upsetting when your cat is sick so often.

cheetah311 gave an answer deserving of best response. I just want to add this: You don't have to keep the food. Bring it back to the store. They should at least give you store credit if you don't have the receipt.

I don't think they'll give her money back if the bag's already open - it's not the store's fault the cat doesn't like the food. Another thing that may be going on with your cat, at least mine does it, if I forget to feed him at his regular times (6 a.m. and 6 p.m., he's a big cat and on a diet) he gets all freaked out thinking I'm starving him and when he does eat he tears into it and eats really fast and then he throws up because he ate too much too fast. Might want to see how much she's eating or how long it takes her to finish her meal, maybe she's gorging herself.

when she vomits, does the kibble come up whole? or is just mushy vomit like that of a human or dog? Some cats throw up because they eat too fast. Others throw up because they have gastro intestinal problems, meaning they have sensitive stomach or have allergies to certain ingredients in the food. YOu can always take the bag of food back to the retailer and tell them that it is making your cat sick. Also did you switch the food over slowly, mixing it with the kitten food to make it a slow transaction? If you don't do this, the sudden change in diet may cause your cat to be sick. If the kibble is coming up whole, then your cat is not chewing the food properly, and should only be given about ten kibbles at a time. If your cat is eating too quickly, inhaling his food, then feed smaller meals more frequently through out the day. Like every two to three hours, rather than waiting 12 hours between feedings. Also if the kibble is not being chewed, you do not want to give your cat free feed. If the vomit is mushy, that means that she is chewing her food. If you already mixed the food fifty fifty for an extended amount of time, you have a few options. 1) take the food back to where you got it from, and buy something that is easier on the stomach. something rich in fibre like hairball control diet, or a weight control diet should do the trick. 2) take your cat to the vet, something serious could be wrong with her. 3)give her a little bit of butter, with her food, so she can digest the food a little easier. 4) avoid foods with lots of vegtables and fruit and barley crap in it, cats have a hard time digesting vegtables. The food should be made mostly of meats or fish. Cats are carnivores, their bodies were not made to digest vegtables in their diets. 5) switch to canned food.

I have two cats. One never throws up. The other is 9 years old, and throws up daily. Sometimes it is fur balls, which is natural. But, other times it can be a sensitive stomach, and they need rice, not corn in their food. Look at the label, make sure it is a quality brand with no by products. First two ing. should be the meat, and then rice.

Cats are creatures of habit and although they are very picky on the flavor of their food they are even pickier when it comes to changing their routine. What you have done is change her food that her system is used to, she will probably throw up awhile until she gets used to it, dont' fret about the food, she will eventually eat it, just will take some time for her little system to get used to it. In the interim, you might try mixing some wet with her dry to get her used to the food and her stomach. Good luck with the kitten.

I use to feed my cats the cheap food also and they would always being throwing it up. I have switched to Hills Science diet dry food and they are so much better. I know it's expensive but I don't have a choice. My one cat has bladder problems and he has to have that food to keep him healthy. So now all my cats get it.

I think it's fairly common for cats to throw up (if mine is any indication). My one cat does it because of hairballs. The other cat doesn't do it at all. I'm wondering if he doesn't groom himself as much as the other. It IS very annoying whatever the cause.

I think you should try and give her the food in very little bits with a little milk after a while she'll get used to it. It takes a while for Kittens to adjust to change in diet. Hang on she'll come around.

Whenever my cat wants attention she barfs. She used to do it ALL the time at our old house. Since moving, we let her out of the room lots and give her people food sometimes (just small things NOT all food of course!). She does barf but just on occasion. Cats usually just barf when they have hairballs or an upset tummy. My dog does the same thing (upset tummy NOT hair balls! *L*). I wouldnt worry about it unless its ALL the time like every day and even more so several times a day. It could be something more serious then like hyper thyroid like I think my now older cat has.

I would suggest trying to mix your cats old food with the new and slowly get her body used to it. My husband and I raised our cats from about 5 weeks old and we had to teach them how to eat milk and tuna juice. Then when they were old enough for solid food they did throw up because their bodies weren't used to it. They would eat way to fast or eat too much. I would also suggest that you give her a little less and see if that helps. I have noticed that kitten food doesn'e expand as much as adult food for some reason so this may be another reason too. Hope that this helps. If your cat is an indoor cat you might want to also try an indoor formula. We get a 18-20 lb bag for about $8-$9 depending on where we get it. We have only gotten this size bag at Kroger and Pet Smart in their brand as we can't afford the Name brand food. Wal-Mart has their own brand of indoor food but it is only an 8lb bag for $5.86 I think. Indoor formula has an ingredient that will also help with urinary tracts and hairballs. Just something to consider.

The reason they throw up is because you must wash out their dry food bowl every day and throw out the old food, dont leave it in the bowl just because the cat didnt eat it. Its the salvia that drips on the dry food and the dish and you cant see it. A vet. told me this and my cats are fine now.

I would suggest giving her a hairball remedy. Often if cats are throwing up their food, it's because they are grooming too much and have a major hairball in their digestive tract. Catnip can also help with digestion. Good luck to you.

I have seven cats and I have to deal with them throwing up all the time. I buy hairball control cat food it helps a little but they still throw up. It is nothing to worry about all cats do this, they lick themselves so much that they swallow so much hair and usually this is the cause of it. Do not worry!

A lot of times, you need to gradually introduce new food to your cat over a period of time. Their stomachs are quite sensitive and when you suddenly change their diet it can upset their stomach and cause them to throw up. It might be an idea to get some of the food she had before and mix in the new food gradually till she's able to stomach it a bit better.

My cat's are allergic to foods that have dye in them. Try getting some food that is a light brown only. That helped my kitties.
