Last April my husband and I moved to El Paso because he got stationed at Fort Bliss. I too was in the Army and had just gotten discharged. Before we had even moved here, I had been looking for jobs and had interviews already scheduled for when I moved. My first interview was for a receptionist position with a moving company, a job I was well qualified for until I arrived and most of the people that worked there only spoke spanish. I thought that it was just that one business and went onto my next couple interviews. All of which I got turned down because I am not bilingual nor do I speak spanish. So here I am, almost a year later and still jobless because I don't speak spanish. I have gone to a number of businesses here and ran into employees that work there that ONLY speak spanish. These places include Wal-Mart, Dollar General, Diamond Shamrock, Dairy Queen, and a number of other places. I have absolutely NOTHING against the spanish-speaking community, but last time I checked WE WERE STILL IN THE UNITED STATES!!!!! Yes- I live only 15 minutes from the Mexican border, but it's ridiculous when a person who only speaks spanish gets hired for a job in the United States rather than a person who speaks only English. If I was in Mexico, I would understand, but we're NOT IN MEXICO! So here I am, a vet with very good job skills, very much able to work and want to work, but unable to because I'm not qualified to work in my community which consists of mostly Mexicans. How messed up is that?!?
