Would recommend the HP Compaq Laptop pre loaded with Vista Home Premium. It should have a Core 2 Duo Processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM, around 100GB Hard Drive, WLAN, expansion bay for Graphics Card (which can be upgraded later) IEEE 1394 Port, 8XDVD + RW Drive,WXGA Active Matrix TFT Screen. Should come for around $1200 or so.

It depends whats your reason your using it and the environment will it work. If you travel a lot, get a light one. you might need a big screen depending on the type of your work. it is also depend on the software you'll use. I advice to get a battery that last long. just remember, laptop is not meant to last as long as your desktop. If your just going to use it at home, it is better to assemble a PC, get a slim case and an LCD. they last longer, easier to upgrade and cost a lot less. the truth is I could not find a good laptop under those budget. maybe I'm just looking for really a high end. 'cause one you buy a laptop, it is really hard to upgrade them

If you have a thousand dollars what i would do, and did do, is buy a 700 dollar compaq which was already nice, and spend the other 300 dollars by immediately upgrading the ram and the software.
