Pinoy Traditional Games.. Have they Forgotten?..

Back then, when I was still a kid, games are more played simplier and more enjoyable. From patintero, piko(hopscotch), tumbang perso(a can put in the middle of a circle, which the objective is to be hit by a slipper), chiyato, agawang base(capture the base) and taguan(hide and seek). There are more games that we use to play as kid, that I think has been forgotten by the youths today. They do not engage anymore to some of the games to which was a signature of us being a filipino. They are more indulged now in playing computer/cyber/online games that play outside and to give themselves a good excercise, the reason why most of the youngsters suffer from obesity. Ihope that this games be preserved and let the young be more aware of it's importance as a part of our culture. For most of us(pinoys), what more games that we dearly miss which should be played by our kids today? For others here, what traditional games does your country has introduced to you during your youthful days? Do your kids still play it?

Responding to this discussion brings back alot of wonderful memories I had when I was a kid. I can say that I enjoyed my younger days alot because of these traditional/trademark Filipino games that we have. I got a chance to live in Bae, Laguna way back in 1995 where I spent most of my childhood years. In that place where I grew up, there's alot of kids and alot of vacant lots where we can play and run. I can still remember the time we used to play "football" (1 team will hit the ball and run to the set 3 bases, while the other team will try to catch the ball or hit the one running). We also played patintero and when its near twilight, we played taguan, until night time or until our parents call us for dinner. Girls love to play piko and those guys who wanted to join us, we teased them by calling them "bakla"/gay. There was a time when I insisted to let my Mama buy me a Rambo slippers because its thick and won't easily get "pudpod" everytime I play tumbang preso. I had so many fun experiences because I played alot of outdoor games when I was younger. Have you played luksong tinik? I love this game!hehehe. So much of reminiscing the past.(",) Thanks for bringing up this subject. If in the future, I will be blessed with kids, I will surely teach them all the Filipino traditional games and enjoy playing outdoors.(",) Have fun and enjoy your day! God bless!

I don't think that it would help kids, they will not enjoy the essence of interacting and activities. I think it is more important if they are the one's playing the game..

Teaching our future children about these traditional games is one way of preserving the Filipino culture. Hope they will enjoy it as much as we do in the past.(",) Is creating a these games online, a good idea?

You should be the head of The Department of Culture Preservation and I the secretary. LOL! Yea, 20 years back I remember playing maro under the moonlight on a dusty street just in front of our houses. I long for those days, you know? Maybe elementary teachers or PE teachers can promote them so they won't be completely forgotten.

LoL!;) I just get the feeling that most of our youngsters today take for granted the things that we use to enjoy way back then, and it really is very disappointing. Teachers should give more attention on this matter, they should include this more on their PE classes. Not only to play it, but also understand it's history and it's importance on our culture..

Those days were really the best, where we we can truly say that we enjoyed our childhood. Where innocence can be seen right through our eyes, the simple joys that we had along with our friends. I also remember playing chinese garter! LMAO

Hehehehe!!!! It's good to know that you did enjoy your childhood years just like me. I also love playing chinese garter cause I also jump high when I was a kid but now, not anymore. hehehehe!!! ;) So many games which require us to move and even laugh at our ownselves and I would be very dirty after the end of the day... Those were the good old days... If ever I'll have kids, I'll make it a point to introduce to them these kinds of games. ;););)

I think youths of today live in a cybergame era. Its sad to see many youngsters waste their money and play computer games nowadays. I have seen kids as young as 7 years old play computer games in a cafe. If they only knew how exciting and how beneficial the games is to their health. Plus we get to bond with other strangers and finally be friends with them. I don't know if this is a traditional filipino game but just want to add langit, lupa, impyerno? We usually do it in stairs when we play it back then. I like playing all those fun traditional games you have mentioned and specially the memories along with it.

It might not be that original, but it was also a part of our childhood. I think kids playing online games are not only wasting money, but also their health.

I have played the games you mentioned and a lot more. I got 4 younger siblings but the 2 younger ones were not so familiar with the traditional games we played before. My younger brother plays computer games. I miss those times. It was so much fun playing hide and seek, chinese garter, jackstone, patintero, chato (i could shout til my throat gets malat!)and slipper game. Kids those days were much more active so they were more likely immune to common ailments. Aside from that, playing those games build character. It teaches teamwork and sportsmanship. I wish schools would really introduce traditional pinoy games back to your youngsters today. Its part of our culture that we should make an effort to preserve.

After reading your discussion, it made me miss my childhood years. I miss the games that I played with my (neighbor)friends like patintero, bulan2x (where one forms a big circle using water and the one who will catch is outside the circle), in-on/ins, dodge ball (we use a ball made out of paper and masking tape), langit-lupa, hide and seek, dakpanay (habulan) and the very famous bahay-bahayan (kids act as a family). Haaayyyyyy!!!!! I miss these games and it's kind of sad cause kids today are not really familiar with these games. Being an 80's kid is really good. ;););)

I love playing langit-lupa also, but most of the times I go to impiyerno!(joke!) THe joys and laughter back then can never be replaced by any material or any high tech gadgets that kids nowadays prefer to have..

yeah, i miss those days! im always on the run to play those games i even hide to my mum to avoid her yelling. but my most favorite is making patibong in the mountains of sands. today, i can still see some kids playing those traditional games but very rare. computers now are not just for business but also for fun and added to that is the easy access that most kids now can get. lots of computer shops now are opening to residential area and even near schools. childhood life is much easier back then but then technology is now starting to sink in. i have a seven year old nephew who are into playing games online but we only allow him to play just for a couple of hours after that he can still play games that requires physical strenght like biking, turumpo and patentero. in that way those traditional games will stay fresh in his mind. i think if children now will discover the great fun we have before roads will be filled of children again.

Right, all I see now are kids who are more often doing things that they actually shouldn't be doing for their young age..

patintero - paatintero is a Filipino traditonal game
As a kid I never got the chance to play all the traditional pinoy games, just the patintero, taguan & piko. I grew up with my grandparents and they don't like it very much if I stay out of the house for more than 2 hours. In this digital age, it's very rare to see kids playing these kinds of games because more often than not they don't have a place to play these games & there are many kidnappers preying on kids playing outside their homes, so they resort to video games that they can play indoors.

I too haven't played all of it, but I do feel privileged that there was a time in my life to which I got to experience it. I guess with all the untoward incidents happening to us right now, communities should then learn to be more organized if they want their streets to be more safer and their kids enjoy what childhood was all about.

We used to play patintero and taguan and ice-water a lot back then... and the one where you hit the one in the middle with a ball and when he catches it it's your turn inside, yeah it was fun being a kid then, it was like every afternoon it was a must to be outside the house to play. I am not so sure about the kids nowadays, I think you can never take that away from them, but the early introduction to PC games and the like is undeniably a huge factor why some would rather stay inside and not play these games like we did before.. We cannot force the children to go out and play of they don't want to but it is still a good thing to share with them these games where they might just find them interesting, you never know..

Teur, because I think some of the elders these days never mind to brag or talk about the games that we, ourselves use to play as kids. I think it should then be introduced again by us, to them. To atleast let them know that playing computer games are not the only thing that they should give more interest, but there are other games to -like in our tradition- that they should also give some interest with..

My 3 year old son really loves to play taguan and habulan with me and his yaya lol! some sort of healthy excercise for the three of us. I think my son would love to play some pinoy games the moment he grew up because he is energetic kid and I will see to it that we will teach him some of those games his dad and me used to enjoy during our childhood years specially patentiro and agawan base and oh! the sipa as well. Some children nowadays are more on computer wizard in terms of online games loves to play PS2 and RaGNarok or counter and forget the beneficial values of some active pinoy games and the bonding moment they will miss with real friends.

Please do let your son be more aware of the traditional games that we used to play way back then. It is where we filipinos are quite known for, these games are what makes us filipino and our own trademark as well!;)

My kids still play those games, and we actually encouraged them to. Their school also encourage kids to play the traditional games, during the "Buwan ng Wika" celebration they had a mini olympics of piko, tumbang preso, agawan panyo, patintero, tsakad and sipa. It was fun!

this discussion made me feel homesick again lol... how i wish i can bring back the time of my childhood when playing there is so simple and so much fun. you dont need even a single cent or even expensive toys to enjoy your everyday games, you just need used tin for tumbang preso, a couple of used woods for tyato (do i spell it right lol) or a borrowed chalk from your teacher lol or even used charcoal for patintero or piko.. hope kids/youths today will play this traditional games , i can say it'll make kids healthier.
