Now in New Mexico, every felon arrested will be required to give a DNA sample. The information will be downloaded into a DNA identification database. What a great idea! DNA is crucial in solving crimes. It's time to start a database with DNA on file for all who commit crimes!

I think it's a great idea. I personally think there should be a massive database with everyone's DNA on file. I know people would complaine that it's a violation of privacy, but the only people who would be affected are those who commit crimes! If we don't get someone into the database until after they've been arrested for a crime, then we are missing all the first time offenders who could be caught a lot earlier if their DNA was already on file. All military personnel have to submit DNA to be put on file. As long as the database is secure so insurance companies can't get their hands on it, I think it's a great plan.

They've been doing this in England very successfully now for about two years .. this has given the police the chance to solve many old crimes even up to 20 year old crimes by matching the DNA of criminals back to the older crimes that were never cleared up ... It's already been so successful that that many 'hardened' criminals are telling the police that more and more 'petty' criminals are giving crime up as it's now too risky ... So just about any crime where there is even the smallest shred of DNA evidence can and will be cleared up over the coming years .. their must be a lot of criminals who are starting to sweat over old crimes they committed .. because the police are out there .. and they are coming for them ...

I agree with you, but some people argue that it is a violation of their civil rights. Once someone is convicted, I believe that they have given up any reasonable expectations of privacy. They lose the privelege to vote, and other civil rights. To me it is a no brainer.

This is all well and good however they cannot process the evidence that they have now. If we are involved in a case we end up paying for those tests to be run and some of us cannot afford. It takes a good bit of time too. So my proposal is for someone with money to build a facility and become sanctioned by the authorities and begin to run it as a business with the DNA and evidence. Catch up on the back log and continue with current business. Unless this happens we are stuck in a situation that needs to be fixed.

Well it is about time. Maybe now they will be able to solve some old crimes and put these people away even longer.

Yes, fantastic idea! About time. They should do this everwhere too! And with no exceptions as sometimes seems to happen in the law for some reason.

I think it is a wonderful idea. Why havent they been doing this for years? It makes no sense to have all this technology and not use it to help solve crimes. Maybe the stories of CSI are doing some good

Damn stright , what an excellent idea. Its about time that the authorities can keep tabs on the ferals of society. If you dont do anything wrong then you have nothing to fear.
