Do you think Splenda can cause headaches?

I posted some questions about the headaches I've been suffering from. My husband and I were trying to figure out what things I've been doing differently and the only thing I've changed is I no longer use sugar. I started using Splenda about 2 months ago. So I'm wondering if anyone else has had a reaction like this to artifical sweetners?

Yes, I can not drink anything with Aspartame in it. I get light headed, an odd headache, and often will get sick to my stomach. It is really better for you to use sugar in limited quantities than use artificial sweeteners. I really do not think the average person benefits at all from using anything artificial.

I'm the same way aspartame bothers me, but I thought splenda would be safe cause it doesn't list aspartame as one of it's ingredients. I have to wonder to about the health benefits and if weight loss is worth cancer? thanks for your response.

Splenda is not any safer than any other sugar replacement, even though it is sugar based. The safest thing you can get is sugar. Sweet and Low and Equal will probably make you sick as well. The only way a sugar replacement is going to benefit you is if a) your diabetic or b) you consume a lot of sugar (more than a few tablespoons a day). If you are looking for a replacement for sugar, try something natural like honey. Just switching to an artificial sweetener is not going to help you loose weight. More likely than not the best bet would be to cut out the drink or food you are putting the sweetener in. No sugar replacement has been found to cause cancer or anything else. When you put anything artificial in your body you are taking a chance that you could have a reaction to it.

That seems to be the general census on this. So no more Splenda for me! Thanks for your help

I read an article about Splenda last night that scared the *!@ out of me! You might want to do some research before you use any artifical sweetner. I'm trying to ween myself from aspartame, which I know isn't the same thing, but what's interesting about aspartame is there are hundreds of articles about it being very hazardous to your health, then another 100 or so stating this is a farse. I really don't know who to believe, but since becoming a diet coke junkie have developed odd nuerological problems similar to those found in MS. I don't know if there is a connection, some sites say yes! Some say no. The fact that it even comes up and I have the symptoms while consuming so much of this nasty stuff makes me wonder. I've had MRI's and other tests and no MS, yet my symptoms persist. No doctor has found an explanation. In any case, I'm really trying to get off the nasty diet coke and go strictly with filtered water. It's just not that easy! I'm probably addicted to the caffiene.

Here's a link on Splenda. I don't know how truthful these claims are, but this is the one I read earlier: http://www.mercola.com/2003/nov/8/splenda_dangers.htm

Propel water is good too. It has a nice flavor and they add vitamins and some flavors add calcium.

As a full blown Coca Cola drinker for 20 years of my life I understand. It's only been in the last 6 months that I've stopped drinking soda. I still have a diet pepsi here and there, but getting over the caffiene withdrawl from soda was not cute. Sometimes I would get so moody that my husband would tell me to just start drinking soda again. As far as water goes I really like the Aquafina flavors. It's water with a hint of flavor.

Yes I think it can be the cause of your headaches. We probably all have something that just doesn't agree with our bodies in one way or another. I've never had a problem with artifical sweetners but garlic powder gives me headaches. Oddly if I use garlic salt it doesn't seem to bother me as much.

I get headaches from it sometimes. But, I have a problem when certain chemicles break down, they can become toxic to me. My kidneys don't always do a good job and take things out of my system. So, I only drink it once in a while. I use mostly plain fructose as a sweetner, but it does add calories. And, they don't use it in sodas.

You can usually buy it at a gourmet or farm store like Wild Oats or Henry's. It's actually exactly like sugar in caloric content, but it's made with the sugar that you get in fruit. So, it doesn't raise the blood sugar as fast as regular sugar. It cooks OK, but I have noticed that things aren't as sweet when you cook it than regular sugar.

Mostly I'd be using it in my coffee or tea. Where I live it's a little hard to find stores like what your talking about, but I'll just have to do my research. Thank you so much for the help.

Where do you buy fructose? I'm gonna guess in the sweetner isle at the grocery store, so as not to sound like a complete idiot. How does it taste compared to sugar.

Yes, Splenda can cause headaches as well as diarrhea. Splenda is healthier in general than artificial sweetners, but sometimes it doesn't "gel" with the health of certain people. I guess it's better to risk a headache than some of the problems aspertame can cause. And I'm a migraine sufferer, so ya know I'm serious!
