I can't sleep without reading first or I get restless. That means I need the lights on until I get sleepy enough. But my sister who's sharing the bedroom with me tends to sleep early and she always need the lights out. Well I usually give in to her, no need to get cranky I will just read somewhere else and when I'm sleepy I just get to bed.

I sleep better with the lights off. I try to shut off the deterrents (or stimuli), so that I could go to sleep; and for me, light is one of them. I'm single, and considering your question, should I get married and my partner would prefer the lights to be on, I would tell him to have his lamp on his side on. We will have to compromise because sleep is important to me.

I can sleep regardless the environment, with lights on/off, with TV or music on/off, depending on how tired i am and considering that i going to bed quite late in the night, it's understandable that i can sleep in pretty much any conditions. The problem with me it's that lately i'm not getting enough sleep, but that's another discussion... :)

I always sleep with the lights off at home, because I usually find it very hard to sleep with the lights on, or when the light comes throught the curtains. The only time I will sleep with the lights on is if I am staying somewhere new/different where I am not so familiar with the surroundings, eg if I stay in a hotel or something I might leave the bathroom lights on in case I need to get up in the night.
