Have you ever been in a boarding/residential school or college?

I was in a boarding school from the 4th grade through the 10th. My school was in a hill station and it was a three hour drive from where I lived. Initially it was difficult to adjust to the way of live in a hostel as I had never lived away from home before. I still remember the very first day I joined there, April 4th 1990. I got admissions in that school after much difficulty since it wasn't easy to get in back then. The environment felt different and very intimidating. My parents waved goodbye and I did so too thinking they were gonna be back. Little did I realize I was going to be left alone with the strangers and study here..lol I had no idea what a boarding school was in the first place..hehe I was homesick the first couple of weeks and then soon got used to living away from home.I made very good friends. We had various extra curricular activities that kept us busy. We also had strict rules and the food wasn't very good, but that's hostel for you. I used to go home once in 6 months. My brother was in a different school (since mine was an all girls school) and we met only once in a year as our vacations didn't coincide often. Staying away from home I learnt a lot, to be independent, I became mentally strong and learnt to accept what came my way. I didn't need somebody to pick after me everytime. We did everything on our own. I cherish my school days, I came away from there as a better person and with a good education. Though I felt bad my parents sent me away to boarding school, I thank them at the same time. Have you ever been in a boarding school or college? What were your experiences?

when I was at University, I used to live in an univrsitary residence...I have studied in the Catholic University of Rome and we lived in a house kept by holy sisters...oh they were not very kind and very strict indeed...but I still remember those days as the most beautiful days I have ever had...we were all girls in that house and we worked together to make our lives there as good as possible..it was wonderful studying together and we had dinner together and then we spent night together...it was just like having many sisters...and I have always missed a sister cause I have two brothers...of course at first it was difficult because I had to learn how to live with many other people and living together needs a lot of cooperation and ...Patience!!!but you learn a lot about people and you can make some good friends..and then you end up loving your place as soon as you have one!!!!

That is a very interesting discussion. I have never been in a boarding school but I can see how it would make you be independant. When I was in the 7th grade, I got my first real job. I stayed with a family that lived hours away from my home. I baby sitted with their 5 children as a live in nanny. The children ranged from crawling to 3rd grade. The mother worked day shift and the father worked night shift. So I had to baby sit day and night. one of the parents was always in bed and the ohtet one was at work. I had to be dependable and raliable at all times. No time to be a kid.

LOL I was wondering why your response was like this! Well if you have certain censored words in your response it doesn't allow it to post. I've had the same problem on several discussions. Try typing the response again and preview it before submitting, it might show the disallowed words.

I've never studied away from home and never thought about it until now. I barely know anyone who went to boarding school, mostly in the UK people who go to boarding school are from quite rich families as it's not cheap. I don't even know that there are that many boarding schools in the UK to be freely available to every day people but I could be wrong. I remember reading story books when I was younger about kids in boarding schools and always imagined it was either very adventurous or very scary. Either way I never wanted to experience it myself :) I guess the closest to boarding school many young people in the UK get is when they leave home to go to university and stay in university accommodation. x

I boarded for the whole year when I was in Secondary 4 (do you call that 10th grade?). I wasn't one of the pioneers but not far off too. I remember the mosquitoes... and the spider who cuddled to my shirt... well, it's a nice time of independence. Getting away from parents is always nice when you are a kid. ;-)

hey i was in boarding school for two years and trust me they were the best learning experience of my life. rite from making frnds to playing games, not studying but playing cards, using the worst language and having the worst fights of my life. it was a mirror to the real world n infact it helped me grow with accepting hard realities of life..with no parents around , v frnds were the only ones with whom though times were discussed..overall i giv a thumps up for ne newcomer who wishes to go to boarding...its a HEAVEN in "HELL"!!!
