Childrens Charity - Wall of Words

Ireland
March 8, 2007 11:13am CST
As part of its First Mile programme, Openreach is challenging the nation to build a mile of words and unlock a £50,000 donation to 'I CAN'. It's a charity that helps children to communicate. Post your word and ask your family and friends to do the same. The challenge is to make the Wall of Words 1 mile long by the end of March 2007 - that's a target of 50,000 words. When it is achieved, every word will turn to gold (or a £1 coin at least) and the £50,000 donation will be unlocked. I had great fun trying to think up words that nobody else had posted. Here is the link:http://www.wallofwords.org.uk/

Good idea and a good cause but they need to improve the site by having someone vet the words rather than have them automatically added. I tried to add a word, accidentally misstyped it and it went on the site, other people seam to have done the same thing, and there's also slang terms. I hope somebody will clean up the list before offically passing it on (to remove typos and make sure nobodies added anything usuitable) otherwise the organisations that are sponsoring it may decide not to donate their money and it could end up reflecting badly on the charity.

That's a very good point. Goodness only knows how many more people made typos. I will go back into the website and see if I can get any information about non valid words. Thanks for bringing that to my notice.

That's great paradisesuns. I must go back to the site now and try to add another few words. I have the dictionary here beside me and I am using the words beginning with 'X' as these seem to through easy enough.

they've now reached the total and are trying to get another 50,000 words before the end of the month (now with the chance to win a satnav - probably Uk only though.)

With the amount of people from all over the world who are building the wall I don't think it would be fair to limit the satnav to UK residents only. Well, I have a satnav so I will continue to help build the wall. Thanks for the helpful information jend.

Very interesting site, and charity. I added my word, and enjoyed the fact that it was only selected one other time. This is a good way, I think, to get the word out.

I'm not good at thinking up words so it took a few efforts to find one but I enjoyed it. I'm going to spend some more time building the wall at the weekend.

I just did it. I didn't know if they would accept a proper name but I submitted it anyway and it appears to have gone in. I also didn't know if they would take anything from somebody outside the UK but I think they did and that's nice. By the way my favorite word is Hibernia. My great aunt Mary who came from your country taught it to me. She used to tell stories of the old country and the hill where the faeiries came to dance with the young people. We called them Hibernian Hill stories. When I started my own business I called it Hibernian Hill Books.

Your aunt must have been talking about the fairy fort. There was one in the meadow beside my last house and even though the land was ploughed and tilled, the fairy fort remained untouched. The village people here are very superstious about these things. They are afraid that the fairies will put a curse on them if they interfere with the fort. I just did a quick check on the wall of words and there are still another 47,355 words needed to complete the extra mile.

It is very surprising the amount of words that are not there. I tried a few times to add long words that I thought nobody would think of and they were already there. To-night I added a few simple words and they weren't there, so I must try again when I am not so tired.

I added one, and so did my hubby, we are going to try to add some more, since I guess we can add as much as we want...or at least I hope to.

Eleven words is great. It took me forever to find one word and then I remembered a word I had seen on myLot. I used it and it was accepted. See! I am learning from my friends on myLot...lol.

You could use your dictionary. I am going to use a medical dictionary at the weekend. I hope the wall will be finished by then.

Hello Alexandria, I happened to check the link you posted and it looks interesting. I will go there from time to time to figure it out. In fact, I added it to my favorites. This is certainly a good way for me to be able to help the little children. Thank you for sharing this site. Happy posting!

Thanks for sharing that link. I was so pleased when the first word I chose and submitted hadn't been added already! I'm going to pass the link on to everyone in my email contacts and tell them to do the same! Excellent choice for discussion topic. x
