Any ideas on preventing diaper rash?

My son gets the worst diaper rashes and they don´t go away for ages. They start off like a regular rash and eventually form sores that must really hurt. I´ve tried letting him run around without a diaper, using only water to wash his bottom and assorted types of diaper cream, but nothing much seems to work. He usually gets them for a week or so, then they just fade away. Any ideas on how to stop this from happening?

I think the first responder had a good idea in suggesting that you switch to a different brand of diaper. This is a home remedy that I got from my mom, that she had used on me and I, in turn, used it on my daughter for diaper rash. Put some flour in a cast iron skillet and burn it til it's a light brown/tannish color. Let it cool and use that with every diaper change until the rash is cleared up. You can put the remaining burnt flour in a baggie, just keep it sealed so that it doesn't let moisture into the flour. For a not so bad diaper rash I used Desitine (I think I may have spelled it wrong) ointment. Best wishes to you and your son! :)

MyLinnsLynn, Your Home Remedy is one taught to me many years ago by an elderly neighbore and it really helped. But, when I mention it people laugh at me. Iam so glad to hear that others do know aout the scorched flour.

I will definitely try that.I had heard about using scorched flour as a talcum powder, but never realized that it works for diaper rash. Thanks!

Hi i think the best way is to check regularly for the diaper wetness as when the toddler grown up the urine will tend to hurt their skin.Do apply the sore cream. My daughter using Dryper and she rarely have those soreness.Maybe u might want to change the diaper to new brand and check e diaper regularly.

I change him about 10 times a day to make sure he doesn´t get too wet, and he drinks A LOT of water which I hope makes his urine less acidic. Maybe I do need to switch diaper brands though, I will try another one and see if it helps. Thank you.

Hi, my boys had diaper rash too. However, they have never developed sores from it. My sons are at the caregivers each time my husband and i work. I realised that a lot of the times, the rashes are because the urine or the poo stays on the baby's skin for longer and this is repeated daily. So i told the caregiver to actually wash my baby's bum and private parts and pat my baby dry before putting on the diapers. By the way, wet wipes in this instance, doesn't help. If my baby does come home with diaper rash, very seldom these days, the best cream i've found is PHYSIOGEL by Stiefel Labs. It is hypoallergenic - means that it is extra gentle to baby's soft skin. Try fiding at the pharmacy. I don't think you need a prescription for it. Good luck and god bless!

I have noticed that wet wipes actually make diaper rashes worse, so if I notice he has irritated skin, I just use plain water and a cut up cloth diaper.

My son used to get diaper rash really awful when he was in diapers. We switched to Huggies and it seemed to help. Also, when he would get a rash, we used boudreaux's butt paste. It worked so amazingly well. When the rash would turn into little sores, I took him to the doctor and found out that it was yeast. My doctor told me to use over the counter yeast cream, like what you would use for a yeast infection and the rash cleared up in about 3 days.

It sounds like you are doing all the right things. How old is your son? A lot of babies between 8 and 15 months tend to get diaper rash when first introduced to solid foods or different foods. Also, they sometimes get rashes when given antibiotics. It could even be yeast infection especially if he has had antibiotic treatment. Since you say it comes and goes you might start keeping track to see if it starts after a new food was introduced or medication given. If it last longer than a week or actually developes skin eruptions I would seek the advice of a doctor. Good luck.

The anti biotics can cause a yeast infection. (yes even in boys) My post says a bit about this on the next page. (I'm not trying to promote myself just was reading thru and read what you wrote.)

My son is 14 months. He has had this problem for some time, but when I think about it, it did start around the time he started to eat food. He has also had a lot of antibiotics, so maybe it´s a combination of the two things. Thanks for your help.

My cousin's pedia advised her to change her daughter's diaper every six hours at maximum whether wet or not. This also prevents UTI and other infections. Anyway, I'm using Drapolene cream on my baby and I religiously apply it everytime I change her diaper. I think it works because my baby never had rashes on that area since she was born.

I usually change my son every two or three hours, sometimes more often because he has very little bowel control due to having a colostomy most of his life. He just goes throughout the day, so it is necessary to change him quite frequently.

I always changed my kid's diapers really often to prevent diaper rash. It really made a difference in often they got diaper rash. And, I always caked on the Desitin, whether they had diaper rash or not. Their butts were white the first three years of their life.

What I do with my little boy, 8 months old is that I put some petroleum(LANDER) jelly on his bottom every diaper change. I never had problems with diaper rash eer since I'm doing that. Every diaper change, I wash his bottom, put on the petroleum jelly and then put some powder. That's it he's comfy as possible. And whenever he gets a rash, anywhere in his body, I put on a cream that is soooo effective. Just put a little dab on and the rash would be gone or dried up in the morning. IT was recommended by our pediatrician. The cream is SYNALAR. You can ask your pediatrician about it.

Maybe try to change him like every 30 minutes to an hour. Some babies just can't wait long for the next diaper change. Just keep it as dry as you can. And maybe try Balmax or Destiten. They both work awesome. I use Balmax it works wonders.

Assuming that you change him promptly everytime he has a dirty diaper, there are 2 things that I would recommend: 1. Put Desitin cream on his bum after every diaper change. 2. Try switching your brand of diapers...one of my children was allergic to one brand of diapers, and always had a sore bottom. Once I switched, it went away. Good luck!

Use pure cornstarch on his bottom right after bathtime and in between diaper changes.

My son gets yeast infections constantly because he's constantly on antibiotics for ear infections. The doc recommended that we use Eucerin cream for dry skin until the rash goes away and then use the antibiotic cream for the yeast infection. He said to Cake the Eucerin on really thick. It cleared it up in 24 hours and I finally could use the cream for his infection. I now use it on my other son as well and it works wonders!

Have you tried switching to a different brand of diaper. My daughter can only wear pampers and everything else gives her a rash.

Wash diapers in hot water with 1 cup baking soda and Ivory deterent. Warm rinse, then a cold rinse. As for his botton, et some cornstarch (not the kind with talc) and warm water and make a paste. Smear it over all the red places and dust lihtly with dry cornstarch affer each chaning. Worked for my daughter and then for her kids!

I would suggest you to consult a pediatrition immediately. Usually, diapers are the best solution for this kind of problems. But, if that does'nt work, you have no other choice. consult a doctor as soon as possible

Change him often!! Keep him as dry and clean as possible. We use Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Works very well. Now what you are describing doesn't sound like an ordinary diaper rash. My daughter used to get this and the doctor had us use antifungal cream on it. It helped tremendously! Also is his diet acidic? Does he drink lots of OJ or eat lots of tomato products? These things can lead to diaper rash. Also it can sometimes be a sign of a food sensitivity or allergy - you may want to track what he eats for a while and see if he gets the rash after eating certain foods. Hope this helps.

I had this problem too. Until I changed the diaper brand my daughter did'n't have any diaper rash problem anymore. In Holland, my daughter used pampers brand but when I'm flying back to my homeland I have to use huggies brand because somehow the absorb quality of the pampers there is different with ones that we usually buy in Holland. So, keep on experimenting with different diaper brand until you find the right brand for your son. Good luck !!!

when my brother, now 9 years old was born, my mom had been using disposable diapers, this was until he was 3 years old. He never had diaper rash cause my mom always used Drapolin Cream before putting the diaper on,of course washing the part with water before putting it on.Maybe you can try to use this and also how often do you change his diaper? It can be a factor.

Hmm.. have you tried talcum powder? It comes in big blue bottles here in Singapore. The powder is white and has a nice fragrance. I think it might just do the trick. ;-)
