I read a blog on my son's girlfriends myspace. She said all emo's are cutters. I know what a cutter is. I work with alot of kids that was/is. But, what in the world is an emo. I thought it was a hair cut.

The way my daughters have explain it to me is: emo is short for emotional. When someone is being "so emotional", the kids say "so emo". It also seems to be used to describe someone who is emotionally dark, moody, or down but not depressed. It is definitely not someone who could be described as a "drama queen".

Believe me the trends of "new wave" emos are "drama queens" most are attention seekers, they do lame things to gain attention. Otherwise You've hit the nail on the head. =) ~Joey

"I thought it was a hair cut" LOL OMG I almost spit out my coffee...I'll admit though I didnt know what it was for the longest time either....I have to say though that its not a punk influenced thing IMO I'd have to say its more of a Goth influenced thing....Back in the day the Goth kids were treated much like what the "Emo" kids of today are....Unfortunately also much like how the Goths were misunderstood, so are the Emo kids...

I look up on wikipedia and there was a good explanation, so go to http://www.wikipedia.org and search for "emo". In fact there are so many definitions I think it can apply to just about anything and everything, but usually applies to people are similar to the new wave, heavy medal, dark clothes, hair, etc. However I was called emo and I have no clue why because I don't fit into any of those groups. However, it is an interesting word. Pablo

wells emo comes from "emotional" and is between being punk and goth... but the term is most commonly used for describing music... if you know My Chemical Romance, they are of Emo Music... it's like punk but not too hard,.. like goth but not too dark... like pop but a bit of a rock thing... emo in describing a person is yes.. emotional.. not really a drama queen but someone who... yes... dresses or acts a bit unordinary to be noticed.. but their fashion is not to upstate nor too gothic, again.. dark but not too much...

Hey there.... i am not sure what they are but after reading the responses i do now sorta. I have a friend named kel who cuts and shes my age she says she has done it for years and its like an addiction and she even knows where and how hard to cut so not to accidentally kill herself. Sad i know but i dont know what to say to her to make her stop and she wont get help.

I have learned that when people cut themself, they feel like they get a relief from what ever is bothering them.

the true emo, someone who is overly emotional. Thats right, emo's can smile and be happy! Many people suffering from manic depression are labelled emo, because they can't help feeling like life sucks. Alot of them also cut, hence people labelling other people who cut 'emo'

I think emo kids are what were known as "club kids" in the 90s. Freaky hair, facial piercings, ravers. I could be wrong tho. I thought emo was a type of music, to be honest.

Emo kids are just kids who're emotional. There's a style and music which goes with it too, but not all emo kids have that style and like the music. Emos tend to be extreme in their emotions, but this is not always a bad thing. Sometimes they're just super happy so they get hyper and cheerful, giddy, giggly. Others gets super sad so they mope.. Alot of them are just plain adorable in my opinion. But not all emos are cutters. Some of them are perfectly healthy, happy human beings who'd never harm themselves.

I'm not an expert on the "new age language" but as others have said "emo" covers a wide range of trends: styles, music, emotions, and such. I do however think that a statement that "all emo's are cutters" is not true. That is like saying all blondes are stupid (I know some very intellegent blondes) or all women are bad drivers (I happen to be a very good driver). I think your son's girlfriend has made a very broad statement and is making a judgement of a wide range of people based on a few.

Emo is a description of a group of people that listen to emotionally driven punk/goth music. They have their own fashion/style which is also classified as emo. My daughter is "an emo girl". It is a whole subculture for the music, fashion and even poetry. The cutting part is just a stereotype because they typically write, listen to or talk about things regarding depression, anger, loneliness and so on. Their clothing is dark, from what I have seen tight pants, belts, converses, pretty much anything dark. There are certainly cutters and self mutilators out there in this world, but that encompasses any subculture. My daughter is not a cutter and is generally a happy kid, she just loves the fashion and the music. She is very poetic and writes alot. I really hope this helps!

OK I dont know, I am just asking and I really dont want to offend anyone. If you dont listen to anything but depression music and write about depression, wouldnt you get depressed. I was just wondering. I love country music but some time a really sad song comes on and it will mess up my mood. As I said I was just wondering.
