Oh.... I love both: reading and listening to music. The only difference is that when I want to read a good book I need time and silence, instead I can listen to good music also when I'm working. I usually listen to classic music when I draw or I paint, drawing and painting are my favourite hobbies and I always listen to music when I do it. Instead in this period I have a little of time, so I can't read because I am a very busy person and when my little child goes to bed I'm too tired to read.

A very practical point you have made here.Music can be accompanied with many different activities but reading can not.Yeah,I too feel like a log at the end of the day.But it doesn't stop me from logging in here.Lol

Good music has a calming effect on the soul .However,if I have to choose between a good book and good music ,I will pick the book.A good book stirs up my imagination. There's a thrill associated with reading even if the book isn't a thriller. It can take you through emotional highs and lows and show a part of you to you that you weren't familiar with.Apart from the fun that reading brings,it always teaches something new.If I was left on a lifeless island with 1000 good books ,then I will not feel lonely.

You are absolutely right in saying that a good book stirs imagination and does help in rediscovering ourselves. Reading a good book in solitude quenches mind's thirst and can be the most satisfying experience. good music calms the soul......another very good point mentioned by you.

Well, for a quick fix I go for music(ex. while driving to lift my spirits) but when I'm at home I LOVE a good read, especially in a nice warm bubble bath!

I love both...I love music since I just love to sing out loud with music..whether it'd be a song or a piece from a soundtrack of a movie...but I think I love books more as it lets my imagination run free with the story---and I hate when I'm finished with a book!!!..so I get up and get another

Definitely good music, I find it hard to get into reading and enjoying books, music is always on for me, whether I am on the computer, relaxing or at the gym when I have music on my Ipod. I hardly ever read but I listen to music every single day.

I think both should do it, reading a good book with a good music at the beckground is really good for relax and entertainment. But for me, watching nice movies is even better.

It depends on what sort of mood I'm in! Sometimes I'm in the mood for a particular sort of music, sometimes I'm in the mood for a certain book. If you just want an instant mood-lifter though, music will do that for you straight away, whereas a book tends to take longer to get into. Also, if I'm in the mood for reading, I'll need to settle down for a few hours, as once I get into a book, I don't want to put it down. Great post Melody1!

Well said angelicEmu,music is an instant mood lifter but if you have a few hours of solitude, then books can be a refreshing company. Thanks for the nice reply

For me, it very much depends on the situation. What I like about music (which I jokingly call "my mind-altering substance of choice") is that its relaxing effect is almost immediate, so when I have had a stressful day I can put a CD in, and feel better at once. I also like music's ability to "evoke" and change my mood. However, I am also an avid reader, and books have the ability to "transport" me to another place... but they take a while to "get into" so they are more something I'd reach for on a day off, or when I have a little more time to "just sit." I also find that a book is more "entertainment" for me, while music is more "relaxation." In general, you're most likely to find me reading, with the music going in the background.

You've rightly mentioned that music is an instant stress reliever while book's pick up is slow but upon gaining speed, can take you to a serene destination. Indeed a great combo.

Reading a good book with good music in the background is the best thing that you can do! But if its a choice i think a good book b'cos when you are reading a good book and are really imersed in it then i think you will forget the music playing in the background! so the book actually gives full rein to your imagination...when listening to music most times i think we are busy associating it with movie or video of the song!...so i think music is good if you want to get distracted from a particular mood! for refreshing its ALWAYS a BOOK :)

Most times i would say i enjoy good music more as it is peps up my spirits, makes me sing and dance, brighten my mood. And i don't have to focus on it. As i can concentrate on my work, anything elsea nd just chill, relax. While if i am thoughtful mood i might unwind by reading good book as it can be inspiring and uplifting.

good music anyday! with music i dont have to sit down and stop doing something to enjoy music but for me to enjoy a book it needs to be quiet and i have to sit down to read it... dont get me wrong i love reading books... especially the harry potter books as the last one is out this year! but music is my life... i cant do anything really without music... it is the first thing i do in the morning as soon as i get up it is on and before i go to bed i turn it off to sleep... i clean to it bath to it... everything! it also gets me going... if i listen to something with a good beat i find i can get a lot done!

I love a good book. A book can take me to places that I have never been before. When it comes to refreshing and relaxing me, I think music does a better job. I love music and it has the ablity to help me deal with stress on a higher level thus refreshing me more than a good book.

at times I do it both at the same time. But ill probably say books do entertain more though music is more relaxing and a good way to somehow vent stress.
