Adopt a pet...

I agree that if people wish to adopt a pet they should go to a shelter...My mother, who is now deceased, had created a pet problem in which we were being threatened with evicition not once, but twice...she was of hoarder personality...I can't tell you how hard it was to try placing the cats up for adoption--uh, don't ask how many we had....suffice to say a lot...by a few miracles a few pet rescuers upstate NY took the cats--I'm down to only two pampered babies--the point is, was that I was in contact with numerous pet shelters for a long, long time...and the sad statistics is that for every pet in every shelter to be adopted. every single person in this country would have to agree to adopting a minimum of 9, yes nine pets--that's how bad the situation is--and one pet rescuer confided in me that if you think the no-kill animal shelters are indeed no kill...think again....the sad truth is, that pet rescuers have to make the lousy decision all the time to put animals down...there are just too many--especially older pets--everyone wants cute, cuddly kittens or puppies...but after the age of two, according to a pet rescuer at North Shore, no one wants an older pet---So yes,,people should by all means adopt pets at shelters and try to put "puppy mills" and the like out of business.

In a sense I do that, but we are more like a dumping ground for unwanted pets. We have a dog that another city threatened to put down if they couldn't make her stop barking. She's a huge dog and they built 3 new homes around her. Yah bogus. So we have a dog now. We get cats dumped here all the time. We live in the country so.... anyway I don't have the heart to take them to the pound.

The best puppy I ever had was my soul mate dog, Hershey. He was a pound puppy, dropped off on someone's porch with his litter and mom. He gave me 12 beautiful years and made me smile no matter what. He was the one of 4 reasons why I made it through my cancer without even a THOUGHT of not making it... there was Hershey and my 3 kids. Only one would lick my face though! :0

i have been in this dilemma a few weeks ago when i was about to put up my two kittens in a shelter so that they can find adoptive families. when i read the waiver, it said that if the kittens weren't adopted within two weeks, they would be put to sleep. my cats are feral cats, regular street cats and i know their chances of getting adopted are almost zero. so i refused the waiver and took them home. My neighbor will take the two kittens, and i can breathe a sign of relief because i cannot bear thinking of my kittens being put to sleep. so if people are thinking of buying a pet, get your pet from a shelter. I feel bad for these pets who have been abandoned and you will see it from their expressions that they know they were abandoned.

I can't adopt pet right now, because I already have my dog. I do think on the possibity to get a new dog when I will move to my own appartment. There are so many dogs that been left, and transfer to dogs shelters, and if no one is adopting them, then they been killed. It's so sad!

I love cats and dogs. I am planning to adopt/buy one this coming April. I'm not sure if we have adopt a pet here in my country. I will check them on the internet and ask some here in Mylot maybe they know. Cats and Dogs are wonderful friends. Owners should always remember to take care of them because they cant take care of themselves. We need to show them a lot of LOVE and patience. :P thanks howard... im glad to know how much you care for them.

We normally look at shelters when we go to find an animal. but this time, was something a little different. My wife loves cats, but hers was so old, that it couldn't make the 800 mile trip to where we moved, so now that cat lives with her dad. And she loves cats, not like great housefuls of them, but one with an attitude, is fine. Anyway, i wanted to get her one, and we answered this add in the paper. It was this old guy, a cat had adopted him, but his inside cats didn't get along with it, and winter was coming and he was worried about it being outside in the winter. Really sweet old guy. So we went to look at this cat and my wife fell in love. It's this HUGE fat orange fuzzy cat. Needless to say we brought him home. his name is Mao, he's got huge paws with toe fur, and a head the size of a small melon. He is a member of the family.

A good proposition. i have done that already. I have doggy in my room. i like him very much. He has brought a lot of pleasure to me.

GOOD words, is useless to spend of 1000? for having a race dog, enough to go in a canile, the ideal companion finds itself, he is not spold and he gives affection, and house to a poor abbamdonato dog. Mine it was abandoned in road are 12 years that are with me are like my son. And it is beautifulst

What a great post Howard and I so agree with you....the shelters out there are over crowded due to abandoned animals and I for one go there whenever I'm looking for a pet.....thank you for posting this and reminding people there are shelters out there

This is such a great message. There are so many healthy pets that need good homes. We will most likely be getting our new pet sometime next year after when our twins are a little bit older. We will go to our local animal shelter for our next pet.

I'm not allowed to go by my family...LOL...they know I'd try to bring home the whole lot!!! No, seriously this is such a great topic...there are so many wonderful pets to be adopted at the local shelters...It's where I got my first Dalmatian...and he was a love..and a showdog with papers...And by the way, I just had this discussion with my sweetie..I think I'm ready for a little friend..and as the weather gets nicer it would be and easier time to train one!!!

You got a good point here friend, people should think about those before adopting a pet. There are many animals that needs care and attention, so instead of going to a fancy animal store lets get those animals from local animal shelter and get them treated well. Those pets won't be like that we get from the dealers but at least we are saving a life. Thats very important

I know the result of going to a shelter for animals. I got my first cat from the shelter almost 14 years ago. She tapped me on my shoulder with her paw when I went past her cage the second time. I knew she was meant for me to take home. She is still alive and kicking and she is almost 16 years old. She is a great cat and we also have a second cat that we found in our hallway a few years ago.

Yes that is exactly how I get all my pets. I do believe in saving lives, and when you visit the shelters, you will see how beautiful these animals really are.

Thats were I got my fury friends. I do believe in going there first. Because like you said there are so many out there that need a home. When I got my little my brats they were just little kittens and now they are huge. I think Im killing them with kindness. They really have to go on a diet.LOL

I agree there are a lot of cats and dogs that need homes. My parents recently rescued two cats that were going to be put to sleep the next day. A dog or cat is wonderful friend.

That is a really noble thing for you to do. I love animals but I don't like having them at home. I feel that they would be alienated in the artificial habitat. But where are you from, You have not put any light to where you live or how to contact you, I might help you get some candidates.

Hi howard...Remember that wild kitten that dragonryder has and has posted on here couple times? Well, I'm going to adopt him/her. She's not sure now if it's a boy, may be a female. Anyways, I know I can help the lil one calm down and accept ppl. He/she is going to be a part of my family soon. I know how feral cats are sometimes put down if they can't be tamed and don't want anything bad happening to him/her. Got the room all set up for it's homecoming. And yes, he/she is going to be neutered/spayed either b4 I get it or soon after.
