I just stumbled upon your discussion, albeit a year old. Feel young, lady, I got my first computer at the ripe old age of 59 and 3/4 years old. It was a Xmas present from my son. He installed it, taught me the basics, and then went home. So for the past year I have been stumbling thru, and slowly learning. Up until 3 months ago, I only had dial-up, so the Internet was very boring, unless you had 12 hrs. a day to spend on the computer, and could knit in between. Now that I have hi-speed, I do spend more time using my computer. I am still not hip on the "lingo"....but it's good to be learning! Congratulations!

Hello dear marilynlynn. I think that it is good that you are still trying to learn the computer. To tell the truth, I also started to learn about computer in my middle thirties and I am getting to know more and more about computer as I have been using it more and more often than I used to. I love the saying that it is never too late to learn. By now, when I read this discussion of yours, it is already one year after, so I guess that you are an expert now at computer. Keep up learning what you desire to learn, my dear friend. Learning new things makes us keep with the pace of time.

Well Hello there Williamjisir!!!! Yah, it's been a long time since I posted this, but much to my surprise, people are still responding. So, first of all thanks for responding. :o) Thanks you for your kind words. I Loved the way you started with (Hello dear marilynlynn), that was really nice. I'm for sure no expert, but I get around pretty good now. I need to work on things like, figuring out how to put my pictures in different folders,etc.... I plan to keep up with the times, don't want to be totally left behind. Thanks again, and I hope that you have just a FANTASTIC-DAY! Your friend, Marilyn :o)

Let's put it this way: It would be really weird if you didn't. Unless you already knew the computer, that is, but by now you have probably realized that it is a live-long learning experience, as computers evolve just as people do only a lot faster. Good for you. Think of it this way--some of us were in our 40's before they had invented computers, certainly computers as we know them today.

Nope I do not think it is odd at all, I did not really learn till I was 40. Before that I never had access. It opened a whole new world up to me, what fun. You will have tons, and be careful as well.

26 Feb 08
Yah, I've been having fun, and yes, careful too. I remember when my younger sister got her first computer, she was all over the chat-line stuff, and it got her into alot of trouble. So, I'm very careful. Thanks for commenting Deea48! :o)

No, you're never too old to learn. Learning new things keeps you young. My dad is 90 and I have tried to get him to learn the computer but he has no interest. I hope that I will not be afraid to learn new things when I get older!

Hi marilynlynn, My dear old Dad is 70+ and he's right into all the computer stuff on a daily basis. It's never too late to learn anything - if you're interested in it, it's your oyster. Age confers experience - and there's always plenty of room for more of that!

i dont think its weird in anyway. learning is life long process. everyday we learn something and add on to our knowledge. and learning computers is very essential in the present times irrespective of age. what matters only is ones interest towards learning anything new.

I don't think that is weird at all, now a days even people in their 70 or older are trying to get into computers and sometimes they manage it better then the youngsters. You're always learning new things in life and it never stops. I'd say it's admirable not weird or shameful, think of it this way. It's admirable of a person to try and learn things it isn't when they prefer to stay ignorant and uneducated. So give yourself a thumbs up for trying at least you are not one of those grumpy people that frown on everything new... Good luck I know a computer can be a hard thing to figure out but I'm sure you will get the handle of it in no time!

Marilyn, you're never too old to start. There are people I know over 60 years old who haven't even touched a computer in their life. Nowadays, some of the community clubs here organize basic computer courses for elderly folks to help them catch up on what they have missed not knowing anything about computers and how they work. At 41, you still have many more years to discover about the computer and all the wonderful things a computer can be used for, so enjoy the experience. The fact that you have posted this means that you have acquired some knowledge already, so keep it up.

You're welcome. Here are some of the wonderful things you can do: a. Surf the internet. Search for information and browse interesting sites. There's a whole lot of endless information out there to explore. b. Store your photographs. Use a digital camera to take your favorite pictures, and download them into your computer. Use photo software to touch them up, and view them anytime you like. c. Share your memories. There are lots of sites that allow you to share your photographs and memories with your friends. d. Create blogs or personal journals online. Share them with others and open your world for others to know more about you. e. Chat with others. You don't have to be separated from your friends and loved ones. You can chat with them virtually free through various ways - msn, yahoo, skype, icq, etc. Cut down your phone bills, especially if you have to communicate with someone overseas. f. Listen to music. You can convert your favorite songs and music into digital form, then play it on a jukebox on your PC. Enjoy these while you work or play around with your PC. g. Create graphics. You can use graphics software to innovatively create any graphical designs. I've seen many people creatively use such software to create scrapbook pages of their favorite photos taken of their family, travels and special occasions. h. Create videos. Take videos of events, eg. birthday celebration, then explore the use of video software to create wonderful memorable shows incorporating segments of these videos, together with other images, text, sounds, background music. You can produce something you can show off to friends and families during gatherings. i. Watch videos online. There are many interesting and entertaining videos nowadays to be enjoyed, especially on Youtube and other video sharing portals. ...and there are many more ways to enjoy your PC and the internet. What I have highlighted are the more common ones, but that's quite a lot already. There's so much you will be missing out if you are averse to the PC.

I started at 43... and today I am a computer wiz. lol And my sister started last year at 50. What would be weird... is not to have a computer at 41... because it is going to become a requirement to manage your life in the future.

hi marilynlynn. I think it is not weird. I have teached my mother how to use the computer when she was about 48 years old. When my mom was at school, teachers didn't teach students about the computers, not to mention about internet;). Today, when PC is almost in every house, children learn how to use it stight after they learn how to talk;). So it's nothing weird in the fact that adults are less informed about PC stuff than children and teenagers. It's normal:). I hope my grandmother would like someday to use the computer. She has never done it before and she is not interested now, but I think she would be interested in learning about using computer in the future. She has her own cell phone now, so it is only a matter of time when she will buy a computer;). have a nice day, jazgottt.

I am also learning in the age of 58. I know that there is no age limit for learning some thing. We start learning from mother’s adopt up till end of life. Forty first year of life is start of real, learning and sober life. You can decide well in this stage of life and you can work wisely in this age. You are not late to start learning computer in this age. Work hard to gain the fruit. Destination of success in right a head. Weird is in the palm of your hands. Wish you best of lucks.

Hi, it's not weird at all and I admire people for trying something new. My mum started to learn about computers when she turned 70! Before that she only heard computer terms and trying to explain things to her without her experiencing it herself was quite difficult so I decided to go out to purchase a desktop for her. Now she is whizzing around the internet, googling things and making overseas calls to our family using Skype! She also managed to source out shops overseas to order birthday cakes online! I think I've created a monster! Keep at it and I hope you're enjoying yourself surfing the net.
