Are you a clean freak?

With me, I wouldn't say that I was very dirty. I do all my dishes everyday, wipe down the counters, sweep the floor. But, I don't always wash the floor, pick up the clutter in my bedroom or livingroom, and dust enough. If I am in a particular mood, I will clean more. But, if no one is coming over, I just keep it marginally clean. How about you? Does everything have to be neat and clean, or are you a total slob?

I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. My mother was a compulsive clean freak, so I was indoctrinated into the process of vacuuming and cleaning house every single day, when I was a kid. Heck, my mom even cleaned BEHIND the paintings, a couple of times a month. I guess I am more of a "tidy freak" than a "clean freak," these days. I feel like if I can keep my space reasonably neat, then it takes less work (and frequency) to keep it CLEAN. Clutter slows me down... but I am not obsessive over a little dust.

I know what you mean. My mom wasn't quite a perfectionist, but she expected us to dust and vacuum nearly every day. She grew up in a time where most women were expected to keep house after they were married and a clean house was something you should be proud of. The thing is with me is that I live alone and no one ever visits, so I don't have to do it if I don't want. But, I like to be reasonably clean. I don't leave food around, I do my dishes, I vacuum and sometimes dust. I just don't put away everything, wash the floor, or clean the bathroom as often as I should.

Define what you mean by a total slob... Really I'm not that bad. But I can live with a little mess and clutter around me. Unfortunately, it drives my husband crazy. I try to keep picked up as much as possible, but with three little girls messing up as quickly as I pick up, it's hard for the house to stay neat for very long. I'm trying to do better because my new house is being built now and I have to train my children and myself to do a better job of keeping things neat.

You sound like you are trying to keep your place neat. A slob just doesn't care and won't pick up anything unless he/she is afraid it's going to get torn or broken. Or, they're going to hurt themselves by stepping on it. I've known people that never vacuum, put all their dirty dishes in the bathtub, and leave everything on the floor. Someone I know just moved out of his apartment which had mice from all the food he left on the floor!

I do like things to be picked up, especially in our living room and kitchen areas. Unfortunately, I have a bad habit of cluttering things. On a daily basis, I do like my floors vacuumed, my kitchen dishes at least put into the dishwasher and the counters cleared, my bathrooms I like at the least picked up just in case a guest comes to visit, our bedrooms we can close the doors, but I prefer things to be put away and organized the best it can be. I make sure to do a weekly cleaning at least once or twice a week... I can't stand clothes laying around, dirty dishes, or trash laying around anywhere. I realize sometimes things get stacked up, but it doesn't stay that way too long.

I do believe that some people take the task too far and can't enjoy living life for the fear that something will get messed up. I'm not that way. If something gets messed up, I figure it can always get cleaned up. Example: My mother can't stand dishes left in the sink after dinner. She has to clean the whole kitchen til its done immediately after she eats. Me, I can let the dishes sit on the counters for a half hour or so and enjoy my family after eating and then clean up the dishes. Some pots and pans that need to soak...I have no problem leaving them soak overnight and clean it up in the morning. For some people, that's not acceptable. I have to give a hand to people that do keep things neat and clean all the time. More power to them.

You sound like me when it comes to cleaning. But, I am one who also likes to clean my dishes right after dinner. But, I don't usually have a lot of dishes.

I wouldn't say I'm a clean freak and I wouldn't say I'm a slob either. I like my place to be clean and neat, but that doesn't mean I clean constantly and ensure everything is in it's place. I might go a few days with the house looking kind dirty and off, but I don't live in filth or unsanitary conditions. The house looks presentable and relatively neat.

That's probably a little better than what I do. If someone were to visit, I would need to do a little more.

Thanks for answering. You probably wouldn't like living with me. Though, I would have to say that I would be cleaner if I lived with someone or had people visit more often. Part of the problem with my bedroom is that it's the only place I can store things. And, I am a working artist and have to store artwork and shipping crates, so that's where I put them. I do make my bed, though. I'm trying to get into simple habits to make the place neater.
