pet food recall! wet canned and pouched foods

Menu Foods, a Canadian Company reported pet deaths from their Cuts and Gravy food, in pouches and cans. They also make canned food for Iams, Eukanuba, and private label food for Walmart, Petsmart, Safeway, and Kroger. Problems included vomiting and kidney failure. See Google.com news for more info as it comes out. The company said it would put up a list of the brand names of all the foods affected at: http://menufoods.com/recall The site is down right now - I'm thinking that they got so many hits that they couldn't keep it running. I really hope that they provide the info to someone before more pet are killed. Beware your "private label" food until then! Feed your animals dry food until we can pin this down. What does "private label" mean? Many supermarket chains as well as big name stores carry a pet food with the store's name on it. That's really just the same product as what is concocted by big name manufacturers, only the manufacturer gets paid to put the store's name on it. These products usually sell for what you'd expect a generic item should. I'm gonna go search my cabinets for any of this...if it's Canadian by origin, I'm tossing it.

FYI You mention above "if it's Canadian by origin, I'm tossing it." BUT all of the food having an issue is from the US based plants, not the Canadian ones. Apparently, this is a problem with one of their new suppliers, but they cannot find any problems with the food - which is weird.

I guess we will just see what is going to happen. I am very surprised that more food has not been recalled. Based on various articles I read there were more than 50 companies affected by this problem.

thank you for this very important warning, I saw a blurb on the tv news but was not able to hear the details. I wonder if it is a mold in the corn filler again like diamond dog food had that was killing off pets after making them very very ill. scary all these food contaminations.

UPDATE: I went to the supermarket (Waldbaum's) and found the manager and her assistant manager cleaning out all the Preferred Pet and Companion Dog food. I did not see them cleaning out the cat food yet - but it looks like they are slowly pulling all of it. Make sure that you do not buy any of it until you're sure the manager has pulled all of it from the shelves! Fortunately I only purchase their ground food, and it seems that "Cuts and Gravy" such and "Sliced Chicken and Gravy" are the only ones that were tainted. That means any meat, such as Beef, Chicken, Salmon, Tuna, anything that can be formed and sliced into those horrid little "slices" (that my cats hate) are suspect. Talk to the manager at your local supermarket and make sure all the affected lot #s have been removed, for the safety of your own cats and for everyone else's pets, please.

Just about all brands of cat and dog food are affected by this. I just bought a ton of cat food last week (Nutro brand) and of course it is on the list! I will be checking labels ASAP

I did a search for this tonight as a ChaCha guide. That was the first I had heard of it. I find it absolutely awful that they havent made the list known. And finding any info is downright impossible. I have 3 dogs, and normally I give them Pedigree, but last week I bought the Walmart brand just for variety sake. Do you know if it is just the canned food? Or is the dry food involved also. It seems like if there is a recall, that information should be out there first thing, in its entirety.

See the website that I posted above, it's active now. It cover mostly wet foods. THe clincher is that there are foods on that list that are distributed to every part of the country! Do check it ASAP.
