The supreme court is taking up a case today on whether a college student who put up a banner which read "bong hits 4 jesus" falls under free expression rights. The case started in 2002, and had to do with Joseph Frederick unrolling the 14-foot banner during a field trip. The banner was in viewable from an area where the olympic torch passed in Juneau.
Before Frederick could collect any damages, though, former Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr jumped in on behalf of the school board and urged the High Court to reexamine the decision. According to his petition, "this case present the Court with a much-needed oportunity to resolve a sharp conflict amoung federal courts over whether the First Amendment permits regulation of student speech when such speech is advocating or making light of illegal substances."
What do you think?

I agree completely. I simply cannot see what harm is being done by this person expressing their constitutionally given right to free speech. There are plenty of things that offend me day-to-day, but rather then harp how people shouldn't be allowed to express themselves I believe it is far more important that they are allowed to exhibit their own belief regardless of the format.
