Its a fact that computers have become really a necessity in the workplace nowadays because of its usefulness. Its okay for those who are computer literate and especially those younger generation of employees who have really been computer literate since when they were still in school. But there are those employees (usually aging 50 and up but not all of them) who don't have the skills in using computers. The problem is that some of these employees are really not interested in and refused to learn about how to use computers. We have this basic information technology seminar at work and some of these employees were ordered to attend the said seminar. There are those who refuse to attend because they reasoned out that they are too old to learn how to use computers. They said that they can just order or request the younger employees to do computer work for them. It makes me think: is there such thing as being too old to learn how to use a computer? What do you think?

I don't think you can ever be to old, though I do agree, the older generation can be quite stubborn. However I have first hand experience with a two or three of these 50 & up's - they learn a little slower, but they get there in the end. When I say they get there, I mean basic stuff but they catch on and learn what they are interested in. The problem with the employees you mentioned is they know if they learn something, they might be expected to be useful at it....Lazy.

Hahaha! You have just said what i wanted to say those persons i refer to in this discussion.. but i'm too modest to say it. Lol. Anyway, you are right. I think they really can learn as long as they put their interest into it. Yeah, i have noticed that those 50 & ups not yet computer literate are more of slow learners. But yes they get to it in the end. Of course, those teaching them should have the patience to do it.

I think it's a question of will and I taught my 82 year old girlfriend to use a computer because she wanted to communicate with her children living abroad. She wanted to learn and caught on surprisingly quickly. Many older people simply don't see the need, won't even try and that blocks them from learning.

I dont think age matters only the need. When people grow old, they dont like to learn. Thats the problem. It is a shame for them to go some where and learn. But when one is young, he can always go to a class or ask another one who has better knowledge to teach him the things that he doesnt know. I think this is all we have in our minds. If we have the willing to learn, we can learn anything at any age. I have another point, when we age, the learning curve is not so much as when we were young. But with patience and practice, at any age, anybody can learn anything, i am sure.

I don't think anyone is is too old to learn the computer if they have the mentality to learn something. they have to be wanting to learn it first though also. My mom doesn't use a computer even though I have tried to get her to. she says she knows nothing about it but she isn't willing to learn it either. My mother-in-law is older than she is and she wanted to learn it and took classes on it. She uses her computer every day now and she can do things that alot of younger people know nothing about.

I do not think that anyone is too old to learn. My dad is in his 70's and has his own computer. Although there are many things on the computer that he is not good with, he has learned to do work well with the photo programs. He is still learning most of the other things, but does have a hard time understanding some of it. It helps though that he is willing, and actually eager to learn how to do these things.

No a person is never too old to learn .. but for many it is a case of being afraid of not understanding or mastering something new. Failure is hard to accept at any age .. and worse when you are older. Also as you age it can be that a person who is working is afraid that if they don't master the new technology that is around .. they might be replaced by someone younger. So for some it is a matter if they don't try .. they cannot fail. It is harder for someone who is 50+ to get a new job than it is for someone who is much younger. Now I was in my 50's when I learnt the computer .. I am still learning in fact .. but learning was for me and nothing to do with working. My partner has been teaching her mother who is 70 years old the basics of the computer .. and soon she will be doing a course to learn a little bit more. She doesn't need to learn .. but it will be something new to interest her. She is only learning because the grandchildren want to talk to their Nanna on the computer .. that was incentive for her but it has taken a while to get her to even think about it.

Yup, i would like to add to your comment that some of those who are older and are not really that fond of computers were forced to learn because of the emergence of them. And computers' benefits are very apparent.. it can be used in communication and in finding out informations. So i guess there are really those persons who were "forced" to learn coz using computers now is already inevitable. Thank you for posting.

I personally don't believe there's such a thing as being too old, I believe anyone of any age can learn how to use a computer. Thing is, you still need a bit of common sense if you wish to use a computer and some people just completely lack that. Others simply don't feel like learning something new (even if it's useful) so they just pull the 'I'm too old' card. My grandmother was like that, she even refused to play CDs! My MIL is 65 now and hopeless with a computer, she has absolutely no idea how to use it most of the time even though we've tried to teach her lots of times. My own mother is 52 and is excellent at using a computer, she loves the Internet in particular.

You are never too old but unfortuntely some people have the mind set that tells them they are too old. Usually it is a fear of failing to learn that stops some people from trying. Lot's of people are afraid of new technology as well. I learned only 3 years ago when I was returning to University and I am 47 now and love the computer and Internet. I actually trained to be a teacher and have taught adults how to use computers, I have taught people in their 70's and the oldest was a guy who was 80. I would not like to be without my computer and have lots of online interests and businesses that I am involved with. I think you learn faster when you are younger, childern for example are like sponges soaking up information, but it is important I believe to always be open to learning new skills as I think that is what makes life interesting and I think is good also for ones health.

Wow, i am amazed that there are still people in their 70s and a guy who is 80 learning about computers! :) But i agree with you that learning is somewhat a matter of mindsetting.. its regardless of age. I also believe and somehow its my motto that life is all about never stopping to learn because, you are right, it makes life more interesting and good for our mental, physical, emotional and maybe even spiritual health. Thanks, i very much like your post. Good luck on your career as a computer instructor. :)
