Should Brett Favre have retired?!?

United States

Ok first off I just want to state that I am a huge Greenbay Packers fan!!!! I love Brett Favre and will dearly miss him when he is gone, but.... and yes there is always a but! Should he have retired two years ago when he was first thinking about it seriously? Would it have been better for the team, or has he been an asset to the new players that the team has brought on board in the last couple of years, not even to mention the new coaching staff!? I personally think that he should retire after this year, and during this year, give his back-up quarterback some playing time on the field. That is just my opinion, but what do you think?

I am a huge Packers fan as well. I have mixed feelings about the whole subject. Part of me thinks he should have retired to spend some time with family. I would have missed him terribly, but I think he really should have retired when he was on top. Now, I don't think he should have retired - I agree with his situation. I truly hope next year can be an exceptional season for him to go out while on top. He has the opportunity to break so many records next year and I have faith in him that he will do it.

i too am not packers fan but one thing i would like to say is he announced his retired some two years ago he should have sticked to it ... or he should have not made any announcements of that sort ... with this half-way decision it may affect his performance

hope1976~ Great points and very true about all the records. Longest running starting QB, most passing TD, no missed games, etc... The list is so long it is hard to keep up with. One fact is never going to change ~ Brett Favre is one of the greatest Quarterbacks that I can think of, even if I wasn't a Packers fan. He has set a lot of records, and has the potential to set a lot more this up coming season. Another fact is that whether he retires this year, next year, or the year after, he will be missed greatly by his fans, team mates, and the NFL alike. Thanks for your response!

Brett never said he was going to retire. He only said that he was thinking about it. I am positive that the day he actually does retire he will stick to it. And all of us fans will be very sad.

I'm a huge Greenbay fan too. But I think Favre has seen his better days and should move on. He has HAD his spotlight and it is long gone. I will be sad to see him go but it is time. One day the team will come back with a vengeance and kick some major BUTT.

I think Greenbay is going to do very well NOW!!! Maybe they are going to start that vengeance thing now. I sure hope they can keep up this winning stuff! I will be very happy if they do. I'm in a fantasy league and I am going to keep picking them. I have my heart set on them. I'm a girl that doesn't know much about football but I do enjoy a good game and they have played them so far. I'm still smiling about the EAGLES VICTORY! I was not expecting that to happen!!!!! GO GREENBAY! Keep up the GREAT SCORES AND WINS!!!

i personally think he should stay until the packers can get a new person to start for him i dont think aaron rodgers can succed him meanwhile his play skills are declining but are still good enough to lead them to the playoffs he just needs more weapons on his team i think after this season he'll call it quits though 38 is the magic number where quarterbacks start to fall

Yes Favre still has the skills and the ability to get us Packer fans to the playoffs. Heck we would have been there this year if the Giants would have lost there last regular season game! Now that was a comeback season if I ever saw one! Go Packers! I think that Aaron Rodgers will do ok once he comes into a game, but I do also think that we need to get another QB in this years draft picks. I think we can do better than him. Don't ask me who, though. Weapons on the offense would be a great thing for the team and some protection in the pocket would be even better for Favre in what is said to be his last year in the game and hopefully we can all hope to see a Last GREAT season from Favre! Thanks for the response cvdrpepper53

I have a hard time letting him go. He is the Green Bay Packers to me. Aaron Rodgers has big shoes to fill. He also doesn't have a fall back receiver to rely on, which kinda forces him into an uncomfortable position.

I agree with you whole heartedly.. I love watching him play. He truly loves what he does. I think this should also be his last year. I wasn't ready had he decided to retire after last season. Gettng his back up ready is a great idea also..

I think, as long as he physically is able to play then he should. Warren Moon played into his 40s and didn't have half the talent Favre does.

I always forget about Warren Moon and just how old he really was!!! I guess I was to young to really remember that all that much.

I think it is a bit more than a yea/no question. The quarterback position is such a complex position, and goes beyond having a good arm. Does Brett Favre have the tools to play in the nfl yes. Had they gone the NFC championship, this question wouldn't have been asked. This season was a MUCH better year for the packers than the previous. The team around him is young, the head coach is young. I think Brett will play as long as his body allows him to and he enjoys it. Obviously being on a winning team is not at the top of his list of priorities. When the game is no longer fun and he want to be with his family more he will leave the game.

My husband is rooting in the background that you are absolutely correct about the not being on a winning team. Brett Favre has never worried about being on a winning team. Not that he wouldn't like to win, he is just there to help out the other players. Thank you for the very good point!

Not at all.. He was an awsome QB and i think he will be very decisive this season, taking the GBP to the Play Offs, and maybe the Super Bowl.

It is starting to look like I may have opened mouth inserted foot with talk of having him retire. I definitely can't complain of the stats that he is putting up this season so far. Hopefully it will stay that way. :)

I am glad Brett is coming back. I feel he still has at least 2 more good years left in him. I think that Mike McCarthy did a great job with the team and with getting Brett back to being Brett. A lot less of the wild interceptions last year. Also I think Brett needed and wanted to be coached a little, Mike Sherman basically let Brett do wharever he wanted and that was bad for the team and Brett. I don't think Aaron Rodgers is the answer as the next Packer QB. He did improve a little last preseason, but has a long way to go. I am looking for the team to pick up another qb in this year's draft as well as finding some playmakers on offense.

shamuscott~ Part of me is glad that he is still around too! I love watching Favre play, but I also feel that he should step back and think of letting someone else step up and take the controls for a while. I do have to give kudoz to Mike McCarthy for his coaching job this last year, things did really turn around, but as they always say, you can only go so far with what you have. Sherman was used to Brett being an all-star and not getting old, as some people tend to think. When you have the youngest offensive line in the NFL you have to expect rookie mistakes and blunders and that is what we got. Did we expect any less, or more? Not really. Good points and thanks much for the response!

I am not a Packers Fan but I do have an opinion on this subject. Brett made retirement noises starting two years ago, and I think he should have followed through since once you have the seed implanted it stays with you and possibly affects you level of performance. He has had an awwsome career and should not feel like he is letting someone down if he retires. Going out on a good note would havwe been a lot better rather than these past two years of keeping everyone guessing. And to my way of thinking they should have been grooming their new QB these past two years....Brett isn't going to stay much longer and while he is around the replacement can learn a lot from him.

I agree that he should have retired two years ago. I have said the same thing for two years that he should have went out with a bang instead of a whimper, but as a true fan, I am still holding out that one little glimmer of hope that he will pull of that one last little miracle and give us Favre fans something to really remember him by before he leaves. The replacement still learns alot whether out on the field or not, but I do happen to agree that his replacement should have been out there a lot more than he has been utilized in the last couple of years. I can only think of a couple of times that he WAS used to be honest with you. Thanks for the response!

Thanks for your response dabratcarol ~ that is pretty much what I was getting at too. I feel that he should let someone else step up and take over the team now that they have had a chance to play together for a while and the coach to have a chance to be a coach.

This season just proves to never talk about a player like Brett Favre... he WILL prove you wrong and he HAS proven the talkers wrong this year. 7-1 and look at some of his stats! He is playing like a kid again, picking up his wide receivers and having a heck of a lot of fun in the process. I am very happy for him that the season is going like this, it would have been horrible to have a crappy season when everyone was thinking he should have retired. Like his wife said "WE are survivors....." Not just her!
