Is your job safe or do you need to be looking for something new???

I just got done reading the yahoo article on the 7 warning signs that your job is in trouble. hmmmm According to that article, I might want to polish off my resume'. Lately, I have noticed a change in the atmosphere at work among all of the employees. Everyone is on edge. It is time for performance reviews to be done and we all know the boss hates to give anyone a raise of any kind. I am not expecting much of a raise this time. We had a computer training program that we were all supposed to work on over the past 6 months. Out of all the employees, I am the only one that kept working on it. I completed 17 out of 18 chapters/tests. I was proud of myself for continuing when others had quit trying. Theoretically, I should get a raised based on how far I got on this program when all others quit. Yesterday, I pointed out to my boss that I had one more chapter/test to complete. Today, the tracking board has been completely cleared. So now it looks like no one has done any of it. Then I noticed the boss would not talk to me all day. The boss acted like I was invisible. Later in the day, I was working with an employee and we were using paper towels to do our work. I should point out that this is a job I don't normally do so I let the other employee take the lead. We had each used two paper towels. The other employee walked away momentarily to attend to something else. The boss came up and informed me that I was not to be using the paper towels for this particular job. Furthermore, I was informed that I personally was costing the boss millions of dollars, millions of dollars because of the use of two paper towels. Then the boss wanted me to inform other employees that they should not use the paper towels. I looked at the boss.....I was stunned....I took a breath and informed the boss that the person that should be given this information was right over there *pointing*. I do not feel that my job is safe. The boss is reaching hard to find me at fault for something, anything, including costing the boss millions of dollars for using two paper towels. How much more insane can this get??? How crazy is your job?? What kind of condition is your resume' in???

I think it is a good idea to always keep your resume updated. I always keep mine updated. Honestly, I don't think anyone's job is safe these days. The last company I worked for was notorious for laying off people during slow periods only to hire less experienced people (with lower salaries) when we got busy again. I'm not worried about my job now but I can totally sympathize with your situation. I have been in exactly the same situation you are in now. Honestly, sometimes there is nothing you can do if your boss insists on finding fault with the smallest thing you do. If your boss continues to treat you badly (even after the reviews are done and he should be less stressed) I think you should seriously start looking for another job. If you want to try bettering your situation in the meantime though.. why not try volunteering to help clean up some messy projects (where I worked we always had a ton of files that needed to be archived).. something that might help you score some points with your boss and teammates. I know dealing with a bad situation like this is hard.. so hang in there!! :) better days are right around the corner.

My job is really good. I've been there 6 years and have steadily moved up. The woman I replaced had been there for 13 years and lived 2 doors from me. When I retired and got bored, she asked me to help out where she worked. There is just one boss and 3 women employees. We all share the duties and enjoy flex-time. I'm turning 65 this year and will be retiring within a year. The other two are young mothers that need to be at home at certain times. Every time I mention about my husband being able to retire at any point after July 1, they start telling me that I "can't" retire, that they need me there. Luckily, I can do so much of my work at home on my computer, so I "can" retire from the office, but still do a little work for them. Over the next 6 months or so, I will be showing the other two women how I do what I do so that they will be able to take over doing it when we do move away from the area. However, they will still have to hire one more person for the busy office. If I were you, I'd definitely polish up my resume' and keep my eyes open for a much better job opportunity.

I thank you both for your suggestions and tips. If I could make enough money online on a regular basis, I would just quit. I do enjoy being my own boss. I am nice to myself and I don't tell me disparaging remarks. I was just so stunned. Can you imagine someone, anyone telling you that you are costing them a million dollars because you used two paper towels??? Where did the boss get such an idea or comment to fling at employees??

You would be surprised how many jerky bosses are out there. My last team leader was a perfectly nice person (we worked at the same job together) until she got promoted to be team leader. I swear a little bit of power goes straight to some people's heads. She started being a jerk to everyone on my team.. and then she would be act shocked when she would ask for help and noone would want to work with her. She wasn't even a bit fazed when two of our top analysts on the team quit their job because they simply didn't like her. Sometimes karma does catch up with a person though.. I did hear she finally got demoted because she was such a bad boss.

I am lucky, I am self employed. No hassles no headaches, no people and policies to bother with. No traveling, no dressing up, nothing. NO STRESS of their nonsense. I work at home, and on the net. www.mgcreativearts.com http://www.cafepress.com/margieanneart

Mine could be gone tomorrow and that would be ok with me. I clean so I could go clean almost anywhere. Also am getting some things started online that might bring me some ok money. Also my resume is up to date and so I already have it online and could send it quickly to anything that would come up if I wanted to. Also a good job and family service center in town I could get some guidance and hand holding from. Good luck with your situation and I would be looking for something better. Too bad you did not mention what it is that you do.
