What have you had in place of a birthday "CAKE"?

Birthday Cake - for a birthday celebration
United States
March 30, 2007 10:19am CST
We often purchase ice cream cakes instead of traditional birthday cakes for our celebrations. We're not big cake eaters. We had doughnuts for my mom's birthday because she preferred that over cake. Just curious if others often don't really enjoy cake that much and use other treats to celebrate?

Last year my sister requested my mom make her a homemade apple pie instead of buying a birthday cake for her. we put candles in it and everything. i am thinking this year I will ask my mom to get me a chocolate chip cheesecake insted of a birthday cake because though i like cake, i only eat like one or 2 peices and i am done but my mom always sends the left over cake home with me and i end up throwing it away.

My husband prefers pie, so last year that is what I made for his birthday. Also made him chocolate oatmeal cookies, as he loves them. I think its better to serve what the person that is having the birthday enjoys, as its their birthday and they should be enjoying the day.

I agree, no sense wasting money on a cake if they're not going to truly enjoy it! We've done the cookie cakes too... those are good.

Recently I made a healthy upside-down pear gingerbread cake for my mom's birthday. For my own birthday, I asked for apple pie. It was delicious and still held birthday candles! For my husband I've made healthy brownies, muffins, and cookies in place of cake.

Oh does that sound delicious!!! Would you share the recipe for the upside-down pear gingerbread? How unique indeed!!!!! I'm a big pie fan too and once in a while I enjoy cakes, just get tired of them easily. And it seems that everyone has a birthday all at the same time! LOL

We don't bother with traditional birthday cakes in my family as nobody here really likes them. Now whenever we are celebrating a birthday, I order a cake made of profiteroles. They are small cream puff shells filled with sweet whipped cream and covered in rich chocolate sauce. It's really gooey and tastes delicious.

we celebrated all the birthdays with a cake. cake is what makes a birthday nothing can replace it. ice cream cakes-yummy and they are just final touch up the party.

I have made ice cream cakes with chocolate crumb crust, vanilla ice cream spread and then hard frozen, then decorate on top. This year my husband asked for a cherry pie on his birthday.

SS15 and SD12's favorite cakes are made from rice krispie treats. One batch for a base layer, and another for things on top. Then we frost them with different colors and add accessories. The best was an off road track for Jeeps with little hot wheels all over it. We've also done brownies and cookies, and even birthday soup, from the Little Bear story when SD was 4. :)

Birthday soup is pretty unique! My mom really dislikes birthday cake... her favorite sweet treat is raw cookie dough. I told her I'd make her a cookie dough cake instead of a regular one. She laughed and said everyone would get sick from the richness but she opted for doughnuts this year. LOL

It is possible to not have any sweet dessert on a birthday. I do make cake for my girls now they are older as they like it, but I never have one for myself or other family members, I just don't think it is necessary. I have family around for birthdays and make a buffet but just don't have a sweet. I would rather have another present instead! lol.

If we have something for birthdays, it's always cake. We might have more food, but cake is cake. We don't go for things like doughbuts. Probably a bit dull and traditional over here lol. :P

I always did like to be different. When my mother stopped making birthday cakes for me at 14 (told me to make my own from then on) I decided on having a birthday pizza. :) Now every year I either have a pizza or go out for chinese food on my birthday.

I did that for my 16th birthday party at our summer camp. Had the gang over for homemade pizza that my mom did and didn't bother with the cake!

WE used to have cakes too. But recently, we order a big big pizza. Then we make small home made cake just so something that we can put a candle for the celebrantr to blow.

My finace HATES cake! He won't touch one, but he love's him some pancakes. For his birthday I make him a huge stack of pancakes, load it with syrup and add the candles. He loves it!

My daughter has never liked cake so one year I decided to make her a giant peanutbutter cookie.Put a thin layer of icing on it like a cake and decorated. It was a huge hit.

Now THAT is unique! Most of us think chocolate chip cookie for a cookie cake! That's awesome!

We love DQ ice cream cakes in our house :) I am quite sure we'd love Baskin Robbins ones, too, if we had a store near us LOL We tend to prefer ice cream cake over regular cake. We also do cheesecake for birthdays and a nearby bakery does this awesome fudge cake that seems like pure chocolate and not much "cake"! The other thing that is fun is to do a "cupcake cake"... by making lots of cupcakes and presenting them on a stacked dish to resemble a layered cake. Works great for kids because everything is already serving size -- and works great for adults because there is LOTS of room for candles ;)

I love birthday cake and ice cream myself, it's one of my favorite desserts. My daughter's tradition is to get a huge cookie cake and have it decorated with icing. Great discussion.

I like having regular cake for celebrations, but we also get ice cream cakes too sometimes. They are so good, and a nice change to have every once in awhile! We also make pies or cheesecakes sometimes to celebrate birthdays, and sometimes cookies. It's always nice to have something different! :)

We sometimes have ice cream cake or cheesecake or "tres leches" cake for a birthday. It all depends what we feel like eating.

When my daughter married we were going through all the normal cake testing trials and just having a time deciding...she laughingly said..let's just have wedding pie...since her husband has never liked cake...and we did it!! Friends from all over brought homemade pies and we used an unusual display for the pies to be presented...it was beautiful and everyone felt they had contributed something to the reception...since then we have a new option at birthday time and we have all adopted it...it's birthday pie...the birthday person gets their choice of pie or cake..but mostly it's a favorite pie that gets chosen...it's a great alternative...the other option that is big at my house is the brownie bake...or the giant cookie...they are all great options and add a good variety...

I've had a delicious strawberry shortcake before on my birthday. I've also had red velvet cake and cupcakes before. I love my sweets.
