I don't think like Birju Maharaj who is classical Kathak dancer is necessary to have a slim body structure.
Birju Maharaj is classical Kathak dancer. He popularized Kathak dance by his talent, dedication and performance. He was awarded 'Padma Bhushan' for his extraordinary effort and ability.
He was born in 1938. He inherited this dancing talent from his father Acchhan Maharaj. His talent flourished in dancing' atmosphere. From his early childhood he had seen dancing and has developed love for it. Kathak is a dance of Uttar Pradesh. It is danced with Ghaghra and Ghungroo. He started stage performances from childhood and was appreciated. His heart got full of appreciation which triggered his, inspiration. He created some new forms in Kathak dancing.
He became respected among dance lovers. He received national award from Sangeet Natak Academy. He also showed his dancing form and talent abroad and got appreciation. He has also received the highest fine-arts award, Kalidas Samman instituted by Madhya Pradesh Government.
He is a great guru of this art of Kathak dancing. He is the guiding light to newcomers in the field of Kathak dancing. He has been the Director at Centre for Kathak in New Delhi. His Kathak dance-drama Malati Madhavan was a tremendous performance. Truly, he is the person to be remembered in the field of classical dancing.

I think a slim body helps their performance in many ways. But, most dancers are slim because dancing can be a hard workout. And, most dancers practice for hours a day, so they usually can't help but be on the slim side.
