Craving a Turkey Dinner

United States

I love turkey anytime of the year. Lately I can't seem to get it out of my mind. I would love to have a nice turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, gravy, and pie! The problem is that turkeys for some reason are outrageously priced this time of year. Unless you hit a good sale, you are paying an arm and a leg for one. I now wait and hope that they will go on sale. I could substitute chicken, but it isn't quite the same.

Yeah it seems like the only time turkey goes on sell is during thanksgiving or Christmas. Although that does sound good turkey for Easter.

I do not know where you live, or I would suggest you find a turkey farm and buy it direct. Turkey is still cheaper here than most other meat, even at this time of year. There is a restaurant near where my sister in law lives in New Hampshire that serves the full turkey meal year around. They even cater for a scenic train ride. I think that would be fun to go on.Yummy!! It is called Hart's Turkey Farm.

The other thing I would say is put it in perspective. If you spend for a whole turkey dinner, even at high turkey prices, it is still less than eating out, and you get several meals for the price.

Oh I know the feeling. Usually in our area Wal-Mart will put turkey's on sale every few weeks but sometimes you do miss the sales. Something you might want to try is pick up like a banquet sliced turkey. Its not as good but they have the slices of meat and the gravey there just ready to be cooked. Then you just have to add in all the side dishes like potatos and stuffing. I might just do this tonight. I had picked up a box of the turkey slices earlier in the month but hadn't used it yet. Tonight might be just right for it :)

There was a time when I would buy a couple of turkeys when they were on sale and cook one later in the year. My freezer is small and I can no longer do that.

Chicken isn't the same is it. Now you have me thinking Turkey dinner. Yummy. That just sounds so good right now. It is cool and cloudy here today, only 55F; and that is a real comfort food meal. I can't fix turkey though without all the fixin's you described too. I haven't checked the price here, but I am sure it's high.

No, chicken would not be the same. I love the turkey dinner also. Thanksgiving is always such a warm time in our house, and I really enjoy it! You are going to make me crave a Turkey Dinner too! LOL :) I love the homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, the dark meat of the Turkey, the trays of veggies and pickles, and I love the pies with loads of Cool Whip!!! YUMMY! Maybe you can try to find a frozen dinner with turkey, and mashed potatoes and gravy. Then all you need to do is buy some pie. :) LOL

Have you ever had Cornish hens? I don't know if you can get them where you are but I would think so. I find them similar to a turkey and I can get one per person at not a lot of money. Turkey is the first meat my daughter decided she liked. She now eats several things that are meat. I am so glad she will eat meat a little now. I don't have to worry so much about her iron. She doesn't like peanut butter any more!LOL

I have tried cornish hens and can buy them for $1.99 each at Aldi. I haven't had them in a while though. Maybe I will be shopping at Aldi next week for them. All I need is 3 of them to make a meal. There is always some leftovers that can be made into sandwiches for hubby's lunches.

My mom would cook them from time to time and go all out. We got to use the 'good' dishes (Tiara glassware!)and the good linens. We could also use the candles and make it a fancy affair for just the family. Eating Cornish hens for me is a treat for the mind and heart as well as the taste buds.

I dearly love turkey and can eat it at least once a week throughout the year as well but I understand about the price. I can't figure out why it would be so expensive; should be less. Oh, well...I love it with mashed and cranberry sauce and stuffing...but if I don't have any of those I just eat it on a sandwich...laugh out loud.

Here in Australia we can get a self basting turkey hindquarter, frozen, around 2kg. They are just beautiful. I love roast turkey with roast potato, pumpkin, sweet potato and a green vegetable or maybe a mix of peas and corn. I make a lovely rich gravy out of the pan juices and have cranberry sauce as well. This is usually Christmas fare but I have it in the cooler months and in October for my birthday as well. Lately, the deli in the supermarket has been selling turkey chops. They are so tender and tasty and surprisingly inexpensive. I have these with mashed potato and other veges and cranberry as well. Yummeh!

I feel what you're saying! I just might have a solution to your problem. I have 4 adult daughters, 6 granddaughters and greatgrands. We sometimes like to get together for family dinners (for no particular occasion). On these occasions each one brings a dish to contribute to the meal so as not to overburden anyone. We used to do it once a month and recently decided to start again.

I get that way, too. Several times a year I like to have a nice turkey dinner. I could kick myself,Giant Eagle had them on sale for .99/lb. That didn't seem like a bad price for this time of year, but I didn't get one.

Awww...you should have got one!! :) LOL Most of the time, I crave something that we do not have and are not getting anytime soon. I love turkey dinner, and crave it sometimes in the year. Especially when people talk about it!!! :D

I like to eat turkey as well. But we mostly eat chicken and use turkey very less at home. I think not only turkey but for every meat price is rising high this time, even for chicken. Hope you get some good deal on turkey and make a nice dinner.

I'm like you. I just don't wait for Thanksgiving to enjoy a turkey dinner. I don't know where you live, but you still can get a good price at Aldis or Sam's Club. Go ahead and get yourself one and have a nice Sunday feast. You'll enjoy. Lloyd

They usually have them at Aldis, but lately they have only had the smoked turkeys. The Butterball turkeys sell for about $10. I was hoping to find one there and was dissappointed to find them missing. Dang.

My students and I go one day a week to a local day treatment program for chronically mentally ill people. (really bad depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar etc) They were planning an Easter luncheon and the therapist asked them what they preferred, a Spring cookout or ham. They all said, "neither, we want a turkey with all the extras!" Seems like a lot of people are craving turkey, as I am too! I noticed a $1.00 off a whole turkey coupon in my Sunday newspaper insert today. Of course as high as they are priced, that isn't much!

Now if the coupon was for 1/2 off the price of a turkey that would be exceptional. A whole dollar off is an insult.

I am so ready for turkey myself. I love the hot turkey sandwiches for days afterward. We are not having the nicest weather right now so roast turkey and mashed potatoes etc will do nicely. Chicken is nice but turkey just seems like a treat. I hope you find a good sale.

Forgot to mention, My aunt sometimes orders a turkey dinner family style at Bob Evans restaurant. I think its 15 or twenty dollars. She gets it frequently when she's too busy to cook, but feels like having turkey. I believe it's enough for at least 6 people. She just calls the restaurant and goes to pick it up and bring it home. I haven't tried it yet, but my mother-in-law just had it and said that it was as good as hers, and since she's very particular when it comes to food, it must be very good.
