How long is your school year

In my part of the United States we start school just after the middle of August, and we dismiss for the summer about Memorial Day, that is, the end of May. Students attend about 185 days of school in that time frame. They have a Winter (Christmas) break, days off at Thanksgiving, and Easter, and for "teacher collaboration" I am interested in other parts of the United States, and also in other countries' school years. Thanks for posting to this discussion.

A whole school year here in the Philippines is from June up to March the following year. March is summer time, the hottest time of the year here. Right now, our kids have just ended their school year, and are looking forward to their summer vacation, which is from April till May. My fiance is an American, and is having a hard time getting used to the different schedules here.

In my area, it varies from year to year. The school year starts usually a day or two after Labor Day. For those outside the United States that do not know when Labor Day is, it is the first Monday in September. This would mean that the first day of the academic year is on the Tuesday or Wednesday after that. There have been occasions i which it had started on a Thursday also.
So far, every college I know starts the fall semester right around that same time, but there was at least one occasion that I remember of when it had started that Thursday before Labor Day, & then a 3 day weekend & classes resumed on Tuesday. THe fall semester usually ends just a couple of days before Christmas, usually either December 22 or December 23, with evening classes ending a week earlier than that. This usually includes the week or two for final exams, with grades being due by January 2nd or 3rd, a day or two after new year.
Mid-terms in high school for the academic year usually start & end around this time in the middle or near the end of the month of January. Colleges & universities in my area usually start the spring semester in the middle of January, around Dr Martin Luther King's birthday. THis holiday falls usually on the third Monday in January, & classes for the spring semester starts either that following Tuesdayor Wednesday. There was one year that it started the following Monday.
The end of the spring semester begines with final exams around the beginning of May, & everything is done around the middle of May. For high school seniors, final exams start in mid-May, & by Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, the year is pretty much over. For the rest of the students, 11th grade & below, everything is over near the third or fourth weekj of June. Seniors still need to come in to take regents exams, however at this time.
During the summer, the only classes running are for students who were weak & failed a subject come back to repeat a class so that they can be up to speed when the next academic year starts. It is usually the same thing in high school or college. Even in college, if the student can afford the tuition costs, it is a time for them to maybe take a minor class or two just so they do not have such a heavy study load during the regular academic year. Being that the college students who study a long way from their homes, students, once they hand in the proper paperwork & get prior approval from that college or university, can enroll & take a summer class to transfer back to their college or university, usually at a state-run college.

It does seem that every area has its own schooling schedule. In online chats, I knew a few who ended up having to get ready for classes, as well as mothers having to get their kids ready for school, in college in late August.
Another variation is that out on Long Island, we akso have a week off for Presidents' Day. I understand that schools in New York City only gets maybe a day off for that, or two separate days off for Washington's & Lincoln's birthdays. However, they also end classes a week earlier. However, out on Long Island, I heard that 'Winter Recess' started because of an oil crisis in which they were trying to save on heating. It seemed that they just carried on the tradition because they may have saw how much they saved on the heating bills for the schools.
Anyway, I only posted what I knew. And yeah, the thought of summer school was scary, but when I got to college, I had no objection to it because it meant less of a workload, & therefore, more time to put into those classes, during the semesters.

Thanks for pointing out that colleges and public schools run on different schedules, and bringing up the fact of summer school It sounds like where you are is very like my part of central Kansas. I remember as a kid there was a universal fear of "Summer School"!!!

Our school year starts at the end of August and runs through mid June. That is if we haven't used up our snow days. If we have used them up and school continues to close, they extend the school year. One year I remember school being open until the last week in June. That wasn't fun considering there is on airconditioning in any part of the buildings other than the offices. Although I worked in the offices at the schools, it was the administrators who had the air and if their doors were closed, the secretaries suffered.

I don't think I could calculate it in days but our secondary schools and colleges have 4 1/2 months holidays every year so they only attend for 7 1/2 months. The Primarly schools have a month less for holidays in Summer so they attend school for 8 1/2 months. I don't understand how the schools can give such long holidays to students because when they start work, they will only have 5 - 6 weeks holidays and will surely miss the long holidays which they used to have when they were attending school.

In the US we are fortunate if we get two week vacations, unless of course we work for the school districts. I like the days off, but I do not like being without pay.

In Australia, although it varies a little from state to state, the school year starts at the end of January. We have 4 school terms, which end during mid to late December.
The summer break is approximately for 6 to 8 weeks.
Each term has a 2 week break inbetween, (so thats 3, 2 week breaks).
We have various public holidays..Queens birthday, Labour Day, Adelaide Cup ( horse race), Ansaz Day, Easter & Australia (which is in the school holidays anyway). There is also boixuing day after christmas.
Every school is allowed 2 pupil free days each year for teacher training.

The two week breaks between terms would be nice. Let people get rested up and refreshed. Do parents complain about it causing childcare issues?

I live in Northern Wisconsin. Our schools start the Tuesday after Labor Day (unless they get special permission from the Govenor to start prior to that - but never before September 1st). They get out the 1st part of June (on June 8th this year). They get a couple weeks for Christmas and New Years, 3 days at Thanksgiving, 1 day at Easter, 1 week for spring break, and scattered vacation days and teachers in-service days through out the year. It is stat mandated that they attend for 180 days per year.

i am in PA, and our school year starts the week before labor day (usually the lst monday in August and then they have a few days off at Thanksgiving, christmas break, and a spring break which is the week before Easter and they are usually finished by the first week in June. the only time they run a little longer is if we had a bad winter and they have to make up for a days that school was closed because of the bad weather.

In the Philippines where I live, most schools start on June and ends in March with 2 to 3 weeks Christmas Vacation on December and April is the start of summer here. There are exceptions, some universities are on tri or quarter terms, so their classes starts either on May or January, I'm not really sure about this part though.

This is really interesting, as I would also want to be familiar with the different school-year spend in different countries!;)
Here in the Philippines, classes starts at June(rainy season here). With christmas breaks also, during december. School-years stops in the end of the month of March, which is summer. That's when easter/lent/holy week starts too, so as of now, it's already vacation for those students here.
There are also special holidays given to students, during All soul's and All Saint's day(Halloween on your country). Other holidays are Independence day, Labor day and the unnecessary suspensions of classes whenever there's a typhoon.

Well in Australia we start school at the end of January, and go through until December, we do have 4 breaks during this time and at Christmas time the children have 6 weeks off from school. I do not know exactly how many days of school we have as I have never counted them.

I dont have kids in school anymore so I really dont know how many days they have to go to school here anymore. I do know that have alot of bad weather and they usually end up making up days in the spring for school cancelations from the weather. They start in August and it is some time in June when they get out.

Here in Canada school starts after labour day - around first week of September - and goes until the end of June. We usually get about 2 weeks of during Christmas and New Year - WInter break - and 1 week March break.
The regular holidays are observed and there are also some PD or PA Days throughout the year ( Professional Development Days, Professional Activity days ) that are geared for teacher's seminars and other professional activities and of course there is no school for students on those days.
