I can't say enough about Withnail & I.
First off, Paul McGann is absolutely gorgeous, and Richard E. Grant is one of the scariest actors I've ever seen.
How anyone could overlook this film is beyond me!
'Course, there will be the few men who are scared to watch a film about two men that might have a little homosexual context in it.
Franky I say poopoo to them and let us film connoisseurs enjoy a great performance.
Ah, so back to the movie itself, I loved it. What did you think of it?
I can recall watching it on a very raining afternoon, in the house, all by myself - and I was utterly frightened for the main characters' lives!
Then there was Uncle Milty, who disgusted me, bored me, and delighted me all at once.
There's so much packed into this movie - acting, actor's lives (and the starvation that ensues) drugs, Shakespeare, even England in all its wet sogginess.
So did you love it, did you hate it, did you want to see it again?

I love this film and watched it again last night when it was on television again. It's a great film because you don't have to be an actor to understand it it applies to anyone who has ever lived in poverty. There are so many classic lines in it and Richard E Grant gives such a superb performance in it I'm glad he shot to fame after it. It has quite a sad ending too for Withnail anyway, you are left wondering what will happen to him with his jobless status and pending eviction. (that's not too much of a spoiler anyone who hasn't seen it, more happens than that in the end).
I did notice watching it last night Noel Fielding (Vince in the Mighty Boosh) looks a lot like Paul McGann I wonder if he stole his look from him?

I've watched it a lot of times, it's one of my all time favourites. Unfortunately DarlingGirl this film is accurate in it's portrayal of poverty.
It really annoys me when you see rubbish like Trainspotting in the top ten and Withnail & I nowhere. Maybe if Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann had been bigger stars, more notice would have been made of it.
