Do your cats/dogs follow you to the bathroom

I swear they think there is an exit door inside my bathroom and that I may be leaving and not coming back. Every single time I go to the bathroom my cats and dog are there to sit and stare. What is it about them doing that. I have heard others have the same thing. My dog even sits on the rug in the bathroom while I take a shower. So tell me if your animals do the same thing. Why do you think they do it?

Rain not only follows me to the bathroom, she will try to jump in my lap while I am sitting down if I let her. This is especially bad first thing in the morning. She also likes to stand on the edge of the bathtub when I am in it...or dip her paw in the water and splash me :)

Thankfully, she is a very smart cat and has learned that Mommy doesn't like to get clawed. I don't think she has scratched me, even accidentally in more than four months...and I'm impressed by that since I haven't trimmed in her claws in weeks.

Every time! I have two cats and they just love to follow me in. I think it's because they have captivated my attention and I can't go anywhere, if you know what I mean. I always say to them 'I don't bother you while you are peeing, why are you bothering me?' But they never listen!

I tell my cats the same thing. Especially the male who likes to jump in my lap when I am using the bathroom.

Oh my.. Do you know I have actually said the same thing to my cats before as they stare at me. They are just crazy sometimes. I think next time they go to the kitty litter, I will follow and stare at them and see if they LIKE it.

Crystal....my nosy kitten - Crystal, who loves to come into my en-suite
LOL two of my cats do this all the time.I have a sliding door to the en-suite in my room, and when ever I go in there my cat Blondie opens the sliding door and walks in.You can guarantee my kitten Crystal is right behind her. They both come into the en-suite when I shower too.I don't really know why they do it.Perhaps it is because I am the "leader of the pack".Or maybe they are just plain nosy lol.

My Columbus cat will follow me to the bathroom if I don't feed him first thing in the morning. He'll keep rubbing against my legs as I'm sitting on the potty. As soon as I get up, though, Columbus runs to the kitchen. Probably knows that he'll be getting his breakfast shortly, lol. My other cat, Waffles, stays on the bed until she's good and ready to come out. By that time, Columbus is finished eating and on his way to the sunporch to watch the birds and squirrels --- or back to bed for another nap.

Thanks for sharing.. My cats love to watch the birds and squirrels from the window. It's cute to watch their mouths quiver while watching the animals outside.

Moomin follows me when I go for a shower and sits on the bathroom rug waiting for me until I have finished. She seems facinated by the shower, and will happily sit in the shower stall to try and catch the water drops.

Mine does that too sometimes. LOL I remember once I filled up the tub with water and went to the bathroom .. My cat comes running in thinking she could just jump in the bathtub like usual. She was shocked when she jumped in to a tub full of water. She always peaks into the tub now before jumping in. LOL

mine all do this too. i like to think it is because they are protective of me. my husband tries to train them to protect me when hes not home and so he will suprise them at times by covering his face and rushing through the door. they always do. so i think its because of that, or else its because they don't want to be seperated from you. thats another reason.

Yes, I really think my dog has seperation anxiety when I am not with him. My husband says that my dog is attached to my hip :-) Wouldn't have it any other way! Christina

Our cats do this to me - not my husband or my son, just me. They will even sit outside of the door if I close it. Our male cat will jump in the shower occasionally, but our female cats sits on the edge of the tub every time I shower.

Oh that is so cute, it makes you wonder what goes through their heads sometimes, my friends dog follows her to the toilet and when she shuts the dog on him he has such a worried look on his face...they are just gorgeous

Yes, I always wonder what goes through their head and what they think about when I go to the bathroom. They sure can't enjoy the smells LOL . If I close the door on my cats, they will sit there and cry and statch at the door wanting in.

This is natural behaviour for a dog. Being social animals dogs like to sleep, move and sit when and where the pack moves. To your dog, you as its owner are another dog, if you have trained it well, you are an important high status dog, the pack leader and it will be happiest and feel safest and most secure in your presence. all the best urban

Topper, rarely. Butterball Jr., a lot! Whenever I have to take a dump in the bathroom, my youngest cat, Butterball Jr. meows loudly for me to let him in. Even in the bathroom he still follows me. He even purrs, saying he wants to play with me in there too. I did, and he tried to get my hand behind the bathroom curtain, and even licks the bathroom faucet in the sink. He just wanted to be with me at all times, even in there! Topper's a rarity. He seldom goes to the bathroom with me, but still he does it too.

I had a cat that would come and sit on my lap while I was on the toilet. I don't know what the deal is with them...I have to latch the door now to keep the dogs out while I'm in there.

Wow, such great stories here! I have a couple of kitties who follow me to the bathroom, and it's all for differing reasons. 1. Tribble comes in to watch the toilet flush. It's his favorite activity, though he does like watching me wash the dishes, too. He's captivated by moving water. He also wants to be first into the cat box as soon as it's cleaned, and I'm the only one who does it. So he'll wait (Mostly) patiently as I clean it up! Tribby also like to watch me take a bath. It's that interest in water again...I've given him baths, but he hates them. One of these days I'll try putting only a little water in the tub, and see if he's interested in playing in it. 2. Zap comes in to get loved, period. He'll hop up onto my lap, beg for a brushing, or just annoy the heck out of me by knocking everything of the countertop. HE wants his petting, NOW! 3. Oden accompanies me in to get his kisses. That's all...he just wants kisses. :) 4. Rainne wants me to turn on the faucet for her. I can't let her drink like the other cats (unwatched) because she always drinks too much water and then projectile vomits it all up in a minute of two. I can't understand why she gulps it down, but I've cured that by only allowing her to drink while I watch her. Silly cat!

yeah, my cat does that. He will follow me and then will sit on the rag and stare at me, and sometimes lie down. Not sure what does it mean though maybe they thought that we will leave them so they'd follow us, and they wanted to come or they just want to be with us.

Oddly enough it's recently become a ritual in my house that our two puppies follow me to the potty. The chihuahua will dance in front of me until I pick her up and put her literally into the bathroom sink and turn the faucet on very lightly so she can get a drink of fresh water. It doesn't matter if I JUST put a fresh bowl down for her, if I'm in the potty she has to be there drinking! LOL Well the foster puppy saw this and thought "Hey, neat idea" so now HE has been dancing and giving me those puppy eyes. Needless to say it's an adventure for bathroom breaks anymore! LOL

my dog follows me everywhere in the house! and it drives me up the wall, sometimes i shut the door behind me just so that he can't follow me. for instance, i get my son ready for bed after we have done the dogs evening walk... we go upstairs and i will read my son a story, the dog will come upstairs, and sit with me while i read. i will then go downstairs to get my son his bed time drink, the dog again will follow, and back up i go with my sons drink, and yep you guessed it, my dog is there right behind me! i will then come back down, dog following! if i get up to get a drink, or something to eat, the dog comes to the kitchen with me, if i need the bathroom, he will again follow me up and down! why? i have no idea, maybe he feels he is missing out, perhaps there is a fear of me leaving and never comming back? i don't know, but perhaps it is just revenge! yes that's right, REVENGE! because i am always there when he needs the loo! i am there holding his lead watching him take a tinkle! perhaps it is his payback on me for watching him! :P

Wow, love reading all these stories. Thank you all for sharing these. They are fun to read about. Cats are smart and most of them are very loyal to their owners esepcially if they are spoiled rotten like mine. I can see from all these post that many people love their cats and they are spoiled too. It's nice to see such wonderful animal lovers out there. :-) Keep up the stories because I love reading them.

Yes mine do the same thing. A few have fallen in the tub too since they enjoy crawling around it while I take a bath. I once had a poodle that thought that the tub was the biggest bowl of water and had to have it. If I locked him out he would cry outside my door waking up everyone in the house. One day I was in the tub and my cat who really had no use for the dog layed across the door way and everytime the dog tried to come in she would smack the dog with her paw. The cat would pretend to be a sleep and the dog would try to be so quiet and sneak around her and bap she would land her paw on the dogs nose and he would back up and wait until she thought she was asleep. I tell you I watched this for at least 20 minutes laughing the whole time. The dog never did figure out that the cat was not really sleeping but instead the cat was enjoying having the control over this dog.

Yeah! Whenever I go to our bathroom, I see them behind me. I don't know what make them follow me. I just thought perhaps, they're hungry or maybe they will miss me or whatever. But I find this as one of the funny moments that I have with my cats.

I wonder all of the time what is going through my Lucky's head because she has to go to the bathroom when I go and she has to sit on the toilet when I'm in the shower or bathtub. She loves it when I'm sitting in the tub and I lean over toward her. She has to head butt me when I'm in the tub.
