Whatever happened to the sitcom?

It seems that everynight when we sit to watch TV, it's either lawyer, crime fighting shows or "Reality" shows. Whatever happened to the good ole fashioned sitcom? There are so few on anymore. And some, I wouldn't watch even if the studios PAID me! Where is the creativity in shows like M*A*S*H, The Cosby Show, Cheers, & I Love Lucy? Why can't we find a flock of friends like Happy Days, Luverne and Shirley or Friends? All I want is an evening of laughter, and I just can't find it anymore.

There are a few good comdey shows still around but they never seem to last that long. I guess people don't enjoy watching them as much as they used to, they like the crime and reality shows more now.
Some of the good comdies still around are How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs, According to Jim, My Name is Earl, George Lopez & The Class...honsetly those to me are about the only good comdey shows left around.

I also like Two and a Half Men. That little boy on that show just kills me. Wish they wouldn't have made his character so dumb, though.
I think the ones listed ARE the only ones left! LOL!!!
Thanks for the response.

I think what happened is the studios were bought by people who only want ratings not good storylines. The writers are only focussing on what 12 year old boys would like. There are no t.v. producers that do sitcoms well like Norman Lear, the father of All in the Family.

I don't think so, at least on the over the air stations. HBO and Showtime may still have the guts to produce good sitcoms because they have more money. Their future would not be linked to the success of the show so they could have more patience. They could wait and see if the audience to find it. They could wait the audience to like it.

Norman Lear was, is, and will always be the comedy genius!! I wish he were younger and could make America smile again. AITF was a great show, as well as the Jeffersons. (I LOVED the Jeffersons!)
Do you think we'll ever see such shows like them again???

Yeah it is hard to find a good television sitcom lately. That is why I come on the computer and have fun and earn some extra cash. It is a fun form of entertainment for me

Yeah, I know what you mean. And, a lot of the ones that I see on now aren't really appealing to me. I think I've outgrown the target 18-34 age group, though. I think I see an actual decline in family programming overall. I can't really think of a network show that is as great as shows like Welcome Back Kotter, Mork and Mindy, or Happy Days.

I so agree! I had forgotten about WBK! (well, I WAS pretty young when it was on the air!) I guess we continue building our Disney collection of DVD's and other movies to fill our time. Maybe the networks will get the hint. LOL!

Sitcoms are still my favorite type of TV show. They do seem to be on the decline. My favorites are Scrubs and My Name is Earl. I also watch reruns of Will and Grace and I like some modern classics like Golden Girls, Roseanne, and The Cosby Show; the type of show they have on Lifetime or Nick at Nite.

Oh, makes me wish I had cable. My children don't know what "real" comedy is.
Earl and 2 1/2 men are my favorite two comedies right now. Although According to Jim is way up high on the list, too. I just wish there was more like them! Sigh.
