I Dumpster Dive. Do you?

I can't help it. Every now and then, I get the urge to walk by myself to one or two of seven dumpsters in my area, and go see if there's anything in them that I can use or sell.
It's like treasure diving, or metal detecting, only it's pretty much immediate. You don't really have to dig - usually if it's something that you think you can use, it's been placed in there cleanly, with little or no goop on it, and it might even still have the store tags on it!
I am a member of a website that talks all about how to live off dumpster diving. I'd be into it if my Hubby wasn't such a grump. We've gone out diving with our car, but did not find much on the two times that we went together. So I do it alone, and sometimes come up with some amazing finds.
I've gotten whole boom-boxes (nothing wrong with them!) and stereos, and TVs, and VCRs, clothes (with tags still on them) wireless home theatre gadgets - and the list goes on! My personal favorite is finding body care items that have never been used, like bath bubbles or specialty soaps.
My equipment:
One headlamp, that I bought at K-Mart for nearly nothing onsale in the camping dept.,
One "grabber" - it's a grappling arm on the end of a stick. I found mine in a dumpster - it was made for picking cans off top shelves in cupboards. It was a little damaged, but I fixed it.
One pair of old gloves.
I really don't need anything else, since I don't climb into dumpsters. I'm sort of a prissy diver.
I also "curb dive", on big garbage nights in my community. What's that? It's checking out the stuff others put out in front of their houses, and picking up what you like! Simple enough.
You can also find free stuff at Craigslist, just go to your local city, and look for the link that says "Free". It's full of stuff that people want you to take away. Sometimes I see very expensive items there. Just be prepared to need a van and four moving guys! You may get a whole houseful of furniture (gently used.)

Hi, Raydene!
Curb diving would be right up your alley, especially if you're living in the suburbs or a rural area. It's very spotty, but sometimes you can find out what nights are "big garbage nights" in your community by calling your government offices. We've seen nearly new washers and dryers, stoves, and great furniture - and it's all free!
Thank you for commenting. I really appreciate it.

Oh, Judyt00! If I had only known...
Just last night I saw four kitchen chairs sitting next to one of my dumpsters! People often toss out what they think they won't use, especially when moving out.
As for leaving stuff to the truly needy - You're right! I forgot to mention that when I do find things that won't sell on eBay but are in great shape, I take them to my local Salvation Army, and get a tax write-off for it! I think of it as going some good, after all, those things would have just rotted in the landfill instead of going to families that shop at Goodwill and Salvation Army who really need them.

No, I don't dumpster dive. I'm too afraid of gross things. I never used to be until I worked for a lady who never cleaned her house and got offended when I tried to. So ever since then, I do my best to avoid goop, however minimal it is. But if you can find useful things, then more power to ya! I once saw a man going through my garbage about 6 years ago and I have to tell you I was weirded out. I hope that bargain hunting was what he was doing. He lived across the street - he could have waited until I wasn't home! LOL

I don't go dumpster diving very often. I think I might more often if I had someone to go with (and also if I had more space to store things for even a few days--I live in a very small apartment), but you are right there are so many useful things that you can find in the garbage and much of if should be take to the Salvation Amy, Good Will or other Thrift Store. Here in the United States we just throw so much into the land fill it is reall very criminal.
