I have not been a follower of Hollywood for years. I have been so disgusted with the actions of a majority of the celebrities. There are so many that are involved in drugs, alcohol, they make a mockery of the mariage vows and partake in just about every kind of debauchery there is yet the American people go nuts over them. These celebrities don't deserve to be idolized.
I will tell you who deserves to be idolized and that is our troops. These people are torn away from their families and sent to all kinds of nasty places where there is no bathrooms,no heat or way to cool down. There are troops coming home with no legs or arms, suffering from post tramatic stress disorder, watching their buddies being blown to bits, coming home to children being born while they are away or kids taking their first steps, etc. I have seen so many brave actions and what they wont do to save a buddy is just unbelievable. They come home so wounded in more ways then one and how are they paid back? A perfunctory clap at parades. I have noticed that Americans are very quiet when one of our troops is tortured or killed but but are outraged when hearing of a prisoner accusing troops of torture of murder. It never occurs to Americans that these accusers hate america and will say anything.I mean what better way to demoralize an enemy than to turn the world against it? .the sad thingis that people around the world and in america have fallen for it hook, line and sinker. They sacrifice so much and yet the people in this country idolize people that don't deserve it.They can't even take a few minutes out of their time to send our troops a card or demand that our troops get the help they need and deserve. I can understand why our troops get so discouraged. Our troops have been my idols since I was a little girl, they are still now and will always be.I love them all dearly and think they deserve much better treatment from the American people and government than they are getting.GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS AND GOD BLESS AMERICA

America has forgotten how to honor her troops. I think it is horrible how some of our veterans were treated in the past. How dare people spit on our troops. I am sure you know which vets I am talking about. We should be honoring and applauding these men and women who do a job that so many of us are afraid to do. They face unthinkable things. They see things that no human being should ever have to see. And still they persevere. They fight not only to protect our freedoms, but to protect the rights and freedoms of other nations. We send our troops to other countries, not to fight wars against us, but to fight wars against humanity. We send our troops to fight for what is good and just. We send them out to help those that are helpless. Our troops deserve to be respected and honored.
It makes me cry to think about all those vets who were spit upon by their fellow countrymen for doing their job and trying to protect those that had no one to fight for them. Our troops don't just treat and protect our allies. In combat, our troops will try to save our enemies and give them medical care. We should be outraged when someone kills or tortures one of our soldiers. We should be outraged when we hear about our troops coming home and no one greets them. We should be outraged when we hear about wounded soldiers being lost in the system or becoming homeless because their paperwork gets lost and they don't get their benefits in time. Yet, the American public just sits by watching and doing nothing.
Shame on the American people for honoring people like Anna Nicole, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and the like. They should be honoring people like Lt. Col. Colby Vokey, who has put his military career on the line to protect the rights of accused troops rather than allow them to become scapegoats in some politcal game.

I couldn't agree more with each and every post in this discussion. Although I don't necessarily believe it's the American people that we have to blame. I think it's the media. The media tells people what to think, what to do, what's important and what's not. And although there's some coverage about the war and our troops, it's limited (not to mention censored and tailored), especially in comparison to the coverage of celebrities. The media dictates the popularity of ideals and idols, for there are too many people that can't think for themselves and have to rely upon the media to tell them what to think.
I think if any intelligent person was presented with a veteran and a celebrity directly in front of them, and then asked the question, "Who do you love more?" 90% would say the veteran. At least, I'd like to believe so.

"They can't even take a few minutes out of their time to send our troops a card......" This statement struck a chord with me. As you know, my son and his unit are stationed in Iraq. It is amazing how little mail they get. They do get mail from their family and friends. But shouldn't they get a postcard or a note from the people they are serving and protecting?? If anyone would like to send a letter, note or card to this unit, here is an address for you.
B Company 615th
Unit #5014-0014
APO AE 09378
Thank you for caring about our troops. It means so much to me (a military mom)
