When and why should a person retire?

I read somewhere that 80% of people who retire die within 2 years or something to that effect. So retirement from your job is obviously harmful to your life. Does that mean you should not retire? Or that if you do retire, you should plan what you want to do with your life after you retire? For me retirement would be a time to pursue my true interests - alternative energy, learn about investments, tend to my garden, and tend to my health. Any comments? The statement above is from the book

Well I think you maybe right in the fact that lots of people die soon after retiring but I find it hard to believe 80%. I retired early 15 years ago and many of my friends are retired people and I have quite a lot. Perhaps once you get to retirement age you are already mixing with people of a similar age. I do think that people who retire must have the facilities to be able to do so and have some sort of hobby or even a part time job. Its imperative that they do not sit around doing nothing as that gets boring. I must admit that I did miss my work for quite a long time after I retired on health grounds and did try to go back but found it too difficult to cope as I was in a quite demanding occupation. So in my opinion for what its worth is.....if you can afford to retire and you still have all your facilities do so and never look back.

I think that a lot of the time, most people just work and work and work until they are just physically unable to. In this day and age, most people cannot really afford to retire when they would like to. I think that would be why it seems like many people die so soon after retirement. I do believe that you should have some type of plan for yourself, some type of activity to get involved in to keep yourself going, whether that be volunteer work or a part time job or to really immerse yourself in a particular hobby. Too many times people just sit doing nothing and wither away.

You've hit the nail on the head, I feel you deserve the best response tag, but it really is too soon to close this discussion.... I do have a plan for myself, which is why I am not afraid to retire, at 46 I have my life ahead of me... By the by, the book I was referring to is How to Make a Hell of a Profit and Yet Get to Heaven. This book has been one of the high points of my life and I would recommend every one to read it at least once!

i think when a person is old enough, it is better for him to get retired.a company needs new life, it doesn't want to keep an old man for a long time.and when you are woring, you cann't do lots of things that you pursue. instead, the time you retire, you can fully realize your dreams.isn't is a good thing? if i retire, and have earned enough money, i would go travelling. to learn the world by myself.hooray!

you absolutely right. im a self enplyed so i dont need to retired,i guess if you have enought income you start saving money and invest so some bussiness while you still in your job. just save and find another altenatives to get income no matter how small it is.atleas there some money coming in to your account.yah i know what you mean, how would you enjoy your retirement if there is no time for you to enjoy it? find another option, do some bussiness. me i always do that so i can have my saving for my out of town vacation and the things i like, life is short need to enjoy it.
