Keeping your yarn stash organized...how do you do it?

I must admit, I probably have so much yarn, that I would not need to buy any for a year and could still keep knitting at my current pace :-) I have a thoery that it multiplies on it's own, but I have been assured from a few sources, that no...I keep buying it. So, now I am on a buying freeze till I use up a good amount of what I have. However the next step is to figure out what I actually have, which means organzing my stash. Currently it's in a few differnt places...plastic bins, tubs, and even an old picnic basket stored aroung my room. But there must be a better way! Knitter stash yarn, it happens...How do you manage it? What's your secret way of keeping things under control?

I don't have a large stash, but what I do have is threatening to get out of control. I had gotten a large organizer box from Ikea that has an attached lid for the stuff in no danger of being used right away. The current UFO's are in either a very large plastic shopping bag or in a really cute leather "tote" with a handle that I got as part of a gift set. So far this method is not working out real well, so there will need to be more organization in the near future.

Yeah, compared to what some friends have my stash is modest...but still, it's bigger than I have a handle on. We just got an IKEA in my state so that might be a good place to look for some good storage stuff.

I had to organize mine it is totally out of control.I have to buy yarn whenever it is a good price, I can't stop myself. So I made a data base and grouped it in to types and grouped them in to storage containers.

I am not a knitter ,so I don't buy a lot of yarn. However i am quilter and have enough fabric to keep me going for the next 20 years . I have taken to storing my fabric in clear plastic bins so that I can see what inside of each bin . Some I have labeled as what I plan to use the fabric for or I might be place a label telling that the container just has fabric 1/2 of metere or under. and so on. Hope ,this helps.

I don't have as much yarn on hand as you do, but I store mine in pretty woven boxes. I bought a set of these boxes (with lids) at TJMaxx in a color that matches the decor of my bedroom. I store my supplies in these boxes and I stack them by the fireplace. It looks good and the yarn is out of the way.

I have a huge stash of yarn too, and I am trying not to buy any more yarn until I can work through some of what I have. Most of my yarn is put away in Rubbermaid tubs, but I keep a small tub of yarn in the living room, so that I have something to work with. When that tub starts getting used up, I will drag out the Rubbermaids in the closet and see what I want to work with next. I don't really organize mine at all, unfortunately. That way, when I do get to pull out more yarn, it's more of a treasure hunt! :)

I made quite a few afghans this Christmas so my yarn stash is back at a manageable level. The first thing I did was roll all the skeins into yarn balls for easier storage. Then I just tossed them all into a plastic tub until I need them again. I think you might be right about it mulitplying on its own though. lol

I usually keep projects I'm currently working on in some reusable store bags. Then whatever else goes in a bin(s). I had them sorted by if they were scrap, baby yarns, and similar brands/color/type. I've seen people who have whole rooms with a grid system of sorts where the yarns look to be sorted by color. Unfortunatly I don't have the room for that type of system in my house.
